Michael Joseph Banish of Howland has been named a 1983 national award winner in science by the United States Achievement Academy. He attends St. Mary's Middle School and was nominated by Sister Susan. His photo will appear in the Official Yearbook.

Traficant case looms as judge defends press role

Howland High adds boys soccer with volunteer coach Capellas
Howland Board of Education approved adding boys soccer for grades 9 to 12 at Howland High. George Capellas will coach without pay, leading about 20 players on a single team. The team joins a tri county league with Austintown Canfield Hubbard Poland Salem Niles Ursuline. First game at Ursuline, home games at Howland Township Park, season ends Oct 31 with a home match vs Niles. Capellas hopes for a state tournament bid if season succeeds. An organizational meeting is held today at 3 pm in Room 229. Pre season training soon, Capellas invites student interest and community support. Capellas, Packard Electric employee, cites Greek roots and lifelong soccer involvement. he’s a certified coach and has run clinics for Howland Athletic Club. He and wife Susan have two sons, James and Carl.

Howland High student Brita Kriss earns National Merit scholarship
Howland High School student Brita D Kriss of 3884 Aleesa Dr SE earned a four year National Merit Scholarship with University of Akron sponsorship in medicine. The National Merit Scholarship Program drew about one million high school juniors from 18 600 schools, culminating in 2 000 recipients receiving awards between 1 000 and 8 000 dollars per year for undergraduate study.

Pre school screening dates for Howland children set
Howland preschool screening for kindergarten pupils is set for May 23 and 24 at Howland Glen Primary and May 25 and 26 at Howland Springs Primary. Scholarships awarded between 1956 and 1983 totalled over 228 million dollars.

Five students from H.C. Mines Intermediate School led the Ohio Mathematics League test with top scores. Top scorers were Lane Beatty Stephen Dulzer Louis Parrott Marcia Puhak and Eric Ask. Mines earned a first place regional award.
