Howland Police and Howland Local Schools offer voluntary child fingerprinting to aid investigations if a child goes missing. Data stays with parents, no police records created, and cards may include name, address, birth date, medical info, and a photo.
Howland Board of Trustees unanimously approved Mark Strang as a new patrolman. The 22 year old native of Howland and Howland High School graduate recently earned a bachelor’s in criminal justice with a minor in English from Kent State University and is headed to a ten week Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy course. He has police reserve experience and has attended many law enforcement seminars. Upon completion, the department will have 17 officers plus the chief.
May 14 events include park office tours from 8 to 5 p.m. and a 1 to 3 p.m. activity block with a patrol boat from Trumbull County Sheriff's Department, Red Cross mobile first aid unit, Mosquito Power Squadron boating info, and area fire departments displaying ambulances.

Howland Zoning Commission and an ad hoc committee near presenting a final comprehensive land use plan to township residents. The plan aims to use land efficiently, address social economic and environmental needs, and may require changes to zoning ordinances with Board of Trustees approval.
Maribeth Griffin, a 22 year old Bowling Green State University senior, detailed unemployment worries and Nuclear War fears in a letter to President Reagan. The president replied, noting job retraining goals under the Job Training Partnership Act and regional economic transition efforts in the Youngstown Warren area.
Eastwood Mall hosts a May 11 to 15 exhibition by junior and senior high students in industrial and creative arts. Wood shop entries feature maple, walnut, cherry and oak pieces by Woods 1 and advanced students along with eighth grade projects and metal shop displays.
