Hope Star: Rodriguez Wins Daytona 24 Hour Race In Tight Finish

Pedro Rodriguez and Jackie Oliver drove a Porsche to a closest Daytona 24 hour victory. Rodriguez, 31, shows little emotion after the win as the German factory claimed its second straight 24 hour triumph with a late surge and a 93 minute pit repair interruption. Bucknum’s Ferrari led near the end before Rodriguez grabbed the lead with two laps to go and held on for the win. Donohue and Hobbs finished third in a damaged but resilient year. The drama underscored Porsche’s dominance in the 1971 world championship of makes.
