Michigan faces critical counselor shortage in schools
Michigan ranks near the bottom nationally for student to counselor ratios with 671 students per counselor in 2019-20, far above the ASCA suggested 250 to 1. The shortage, compounded by a decline in school psychologists and rising trauma, prompts calls for loan forgiveness, grow your own programs, and policy focus to attract and retain qualified professionals.

Adjacent data show school psychologists at 1521:1 versus 500:1 recommended, with district ratios ranging from 1,200:1 to 2,000:1.
