Guatemalan Tortilla Industry Ties to Girls Labor
A Pan American Development Foundation study across 292 tortilla shops in Guatemala City and four other cities shows many girls and young women from impoverished families labor long hours seven days a week. Most workers are Indigenous Maya, with 52 percent under 18. wages are often unpaid or below the minimum, and some work over 14 hours daily around hot griddles in small shops. Florinda, 20, is among those profiled, sleeping behind the shop where she works.
