Zeeland, once a dry city, now embraces alcohol sales as an economic driver. The council plans a December 20 vote on changes to social district rules that allow drinking on sidewalks in downtown. The shift followed a 15 year evolution from prohibition to vibrant downtown activity.
A Ottawa County circuit judge dismissed a lawsuit by parents seeking to void the pre K through 6 mask mandate and to challenge the board of commissioners on firing the county health officer who signed the order. Judge Jon Hulsing ruled from the bench on December 6. The decision preserves the mandate until January 2 and urges continued masking in groups amid high COVID-19 activity statewide. State lawmakers Roger Victory and Luke Meerman supported the suit when filed in September.
West Michigan police and prosecutors say threats in the wake of the Oxford High School attack will bring consequences. One juvenile faces charges for an intended act of violence at Zeeland Christian School as GHAPS and Zeeland Public Schools remain closed amid ongoing investigations. Other threats are deemed not credible as Zeeland schools resume with a pre planned day off for GHAPS.
