Lawsuit Over Brick Messages Continues in Allendale
Residents supported by the University of Michigan Civil Rights Litigation Initiative allege civil rights violations after being denied commemorative bricks in the Garden of Honor with messages like BLACK LIVES MATTER TAKE IT DOWN. The township amended brick inscriptions in March to restrict messages to specific veteran related terms. Plaintiff Tony Miller, a Black former Allendale resident, says the changes target promoting racial justice. The Civil War statue in the Garden of Honor has sparked protests since 2020, with past meetings debating its fate and possible removal or replacement.
