Special Interests Ply More Money To Congressmen
Special interest groups shifted money into congressional races at about twice the 1974 pace, with Democrats receiving a larger share from corporate committees. Through Sept. 1, 1974, 1,041 committees gave 10.1 million to House and Senate candidates, up from 504 committees and 5.5 million two years earlier. The American Medical Association led contributions, with 963,725, nearly 10 percent of the total. Dairy committees, once under Watergate milk fund scrutiny, again totalled 682,184. AFL CIO political committees stood at 630,974. Corporate groups rapidly expanded their donor presence.
