Panel Moves To Control Water Use In Yadkin Basin
The Environmental Management Commission approved a plan to require permits for large water withdrawals from the Yadkin River, potentially mandating Duke Power to obtain another permit for the Perkins nuclear plant near Winston-Salem. The panel also ordered hearings on October 28 to decide on capacity use area status for the river and possible broad application to all 17 North Carolina basins. Duke offered to enlarge Carter Creek reservoir to lessen the plant’s river impact.
