College Student Legal Advice Adds to Campus Fees
At UNC Chapel Hill, 900 students used the prepaid legal services plan in its first year with Dorothy Bernholz as staff attorney. NC State and Duke run similar programs addressing landlord tenant disputes and civil suits under 500 dollars. Bernholz notes cohabitation issues, security deposits, and that most tenants avoid litigation due to public shaming. The UNC student government allocated $20,000 for the program. law students assist, and preventive workshops are offered.
