Mudslides Block Mountain Roads In North Carolina
Heavy rains from the dying Hurricane Babe trigger mud slides on North Carolina mountain roads, flooding city streets and rural routes. Roads blocked include Highway 178 near Rosman, U S 74 north of Rosman, and U S 25 south of Hendersonville, with 2 to 7 inches of rainfall and some rivers in moderate flood. A flash flood watch covered the northern Piedmont and northern coastal Plain before being discontinued for mountains and southern Piedmont. The storm, aided by a cold low pressure system, was expected to continue through the Southeast, with small craft advisories issued along the coast and winds ranging from northeast to east.
