General Brown’s Israel stance draws Jewish backlash

Gen George S Brown, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, provoked Jewish leaders again by saying Israel is a military burden to the United States. The Conference of Presidents condemned the remark as reckless and urged Ford to censure him. Brown defended his view as a narrow military point about Israel drawing on U.S. equipment. Rabbinical leaders rejected the claim, noting broad pro Israel sentiment and warning against misstatements.
