Mom And Pop Circus Making The Rounds
CHARLOTTE AP Bil Stebbing of the Stebbing Royal European Circus says he is a descendant of court jesters and bareback riders who performed in European castles as early as 800 years ago. He made his debut under the tent when he was 6 playing a midget. Since then he has been an acrobat, a clown, a bareback rider, a tumbler, a wirewalker, and a trainer of football playing dogs. He's 51 now and doesn't perform anymore. His family owns the circus, which bills itself as the last one ring, family circus in America. It gave a performance in nearby Pineville last Wednesday night as part of an effort to raise money for a rescue unit. The circus was at Davidson College last Friday and at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte on Saturday. The Stebbings left England 20 years ago to perform in big name circuses, on television shows and in night clubs. Five years ago, they decided to start their own circus. It features elephants, tigers, monkeys, ponies, high wire acts and acrobatics. Stebbing has a crew of 30, including his wife born into a circus family two sons, two daughters, a daughter in law and a granddaughter. They have been touring mostly small towns in America. And just about breaking even, Stebbing says. Money isn't everything, says his wife. We have this peculiar outlook on life. The feeling of the public liking you is the payment for a performance.
