High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - May 12, 1974, High Point, North Carolina Let s talk about your kid High Point Enterprise sunday May 12, 1974 a problem pregnancies walk fast Don t run Archdale voters Back their leaders a a what am i going to do if she a pregnant a pain was written All Over this Mother s face As she spoke. A Don t panic a i said a this is a bad situation but we can work through it a one Day at a unfortunately Many premarital pregnancies have resulted in permanent damage to family relationships and individuals because of Hasty emotionally charged decisions and actions. The pressure to a do something is a great deterrent to arriving at the least destructive decision. To be sure. Sitting around doing nothing is not in order. Within 12 to 13 weeks from the Conception the alternatives begin to narrow rapidly. This is often complicated by the fact that families Arery to told of the pregnancy until it has progressed eight or nine week. Perhaps the Best advice is that of the old fire Drill axiom a walk fast a Don t there Are basically four viable alternatives available to an unwed expectant Mother. She can get married raise the child herself maybe with the Aid of her parents put the child up for adoption or have an abortion. They All offer certain i by Tom Watson advantages but each has its inherent problems. While i would like to discuss each one briefly i will not seek to enter the massive debates that Are continually raging on each. The children a Home society of North Carolina has available a considerable amount of information on each alternative listed. Certain organization like Birthright. Inc., advocate a specific position on one or More of the alternatives. My purpose Here is to simply raise some considerations to be made and to encourage families to seek outside help in dealing with the problem. Each situation must be dealt with individually. Now lets take a look at the alternatives in the order in which i listed them and some things that should be discussed with a counsellor in each. I. The girl can get married. Hospital week observed Here residents of High Point will have an Opportunity to become better informed about the services activities and future goals of High Point memorial during National Hospital week May 12-18, 1974. High Point memorial is joining 7,000 hospitals throughout the country in observation of the annual event with the National slogan a get to know us before you need on announcing National Hospital week Ned Clark administrator said a in this Era of vast social and economic change people Are concerned about How hospitals Are meeting growth health care needs both inside and outside their Walls. They have a rightful interest in How effectively and efficiently hospitals Are fulfilling their responsibilities and about the rising costs of health care services. A the objectives of our National Hospital week 1974 activities Are to encourage the people of this Community As Well As those closely involved with the institution to a get to know As they a get to know us a we Hope the Public will then better understand that we need their involvement and support in order to meet our obligations to the National Hospital week sponsored by the american Hospital association was begun in 1920 when leaders in the health Field established a National Hospital Day to Mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale the woman credited with establishing the modern profession of nursing. In 1953, National Hospital Day was extended to the week Long event now the heaviest brain Ever recorded was that of Ivan Serg Yevich Turgenev the russian author. His brain weighed 4 pounds 6.96 ounces. A few decades ago this was considered the Only a a honorable solution. However the rapid Rise in the divorce rate particularly among teenagers and other problems have made Many wonder if marriage under pressure is not a second big mistake to further compound the tragedy marriage might be a satisfactory alternative if the following conditions can be met. A. Both persons Are old enough and sufficiently mature to Cope with the problems of marriage and parenthood under very strained conditions. This is of course a value judgment and should be made after talking with a family Counselor. B. The two persons love each other and want to get married. When one or both of the partners feels forced into a marriage the result is usually pretty bad. Unfortunately it is often the child who suffers most from a marriage of c. Both persons Are willing to assume the responsibilities of rearing the child in love. D. There Are no problems that could doom the marriage before it is begun. Drug addiction alcoholism and veneral disease should All be considered too heavy a Burden to place on a new a a pressurized marriage. Should the above conditions be met i would suggest that you ask a minister to perform the wedding. He should be told the whole situation so that he can offer premarital counselling and follow up support to the new family. Should these conditions not be met marriage should be discouraged. One word of caution be careful about trying to Stop a couple from getting married when their hearts Are set on it. We have encountered some youngsters who have fled to other states to get married. Some have simply run away to have the baby. Some of today s a a free thinking youths Are even having babies without medical attention. Again let me emphasize the importance of allowing the girl to make the final decision. Manipulation to satisfy the desires of parents Seldom is Best for the girl or the child and can be tragic. Next week we shall take a look at the other alternatives available. Should you have specific questions or needs write to us at youth unlimited inc., p. O. Archdale voters went to the polls tuesday and expressed themselves so strongly on the water Issue that City Council members no longer have to guess about having the support of their people. About As Many residents turned out to express themselves on the $2 million water Bond referendum As have voted in any of the elections held since Archdale incorporated in 1969. Fyk r the past four years or so councilmen have struggled to bring clean water to their City and at a Cost which would not be prohibitive to its citizens and this they feel they have done. The Road to tuesdays vote was not easy for the Council members who Over the past four years have met one Roadblock after another. Every time the Council thought it had a Good program something happened to disappoint them. Councilman Bill Kinley who has spearheaded the program must have thought at times of dropping the entire thing and just giving up. Instead he along with the other members of the Council and City engineers worked hard and came up with a program which voters gave i ramblings i w by Don Wrenn an overwhelmingly approval to tuesday. If the plans do not have to be revised after they go to the various state and Federal offices and if construction goes As planned Archdale citizens May have Good clean water going into their Homes schools and businesses by december of 1975. The City is not stopping at this Point in making the costs As Low As possible but when the Council meets on tuesday night members will be asked to approve a plan whereby All residents will not have to pay the initial tap on fee All in one Lump sum but will be Able to make monthly payments. This will be especially beneficial to those Archdale residents living on fixed incomes but it will be available to any citizens who May wish to make use of it. The Council deserves a Pat on the Back for its work in bringing clean water to its citizens. The u s.
