Stock market slips as profit taking deepens losses
New York shares declined as profit taking presses prices lower amid quiet trading. The Dow fell about 590 to 981.50 at noon, with losers outnumbering gainers on the NYSE and analysts warning inflation and interest rates could rise. Sony traded heavily with a 200000 share block, while Elevator and United Technologies advanced as markets opened the week.

Peanut price supports blamed for high costs to taxpayers
Paul Holmes of the Agriculture Department explains Georgia peanut growers and government aid inflate costs. Since 1971 the federal support price rose from 267 to 304.50 per ton, with world prices around 200-250, while yields surged from 800 to 3,329 pounds per acre. About 40 percent of last year’s crop was purchased by the government, and seed peanut farmers like Carter gain indirectly from higher prices. Taxpayers face about 160 million in costs, and consumers pay more for peanut products as processors pass along higher prices.

Truck Contract Talks Reach Critical Stage in Labor Fight
Labor Secretary W J Usery calls trucking contract talks at a critical stage as a Teamsters strike looms for Wednesday midnight. He and James Searce, acting head of FMCS, met with labor and management negotiators after all day talks and plan another session. Teamsters had scaled back wage demand to 1.75 per hour and 17 weekly in benefits, while seeking a cost of living adjustment with no cap.

Court death penalty cases linger over Furman ruling
Justices heard appeals from six death row inmates arguing Georgia's non mandatory system mirrors Furman. Lawyers for Proffitt and Gregg say discretionary rulings create unequal outcomes. Georgia contends the challenge seeks mandatory penalties. Separately, Teamsters authorize a nationwide strike over a wage and benefits offer, fearing truck shutdowns undermine economic recovery. Taft Hartley injunction discussed as potential option. Steel haulers association says it will ignore a strike if called.
