Antarctic Radio Racetrack Draws Scientists To Siple Station
At McMurdo and Siple Station near the South Pole a magnetic racetrack enables low frequency Morse code reception from US and international forces. Stanford engineer John Katsafrakis leads the NSF backed project with plans for winter operations in 1972. Two to three scientists along with a mechanic and a physician will winter at Siple, while graduate students may commute daily.
