A chance of thundershowers grows mainly in the eastern part Thursday as rain fell Tuesday across many areas, hardest in Goldsboro with near three inches. Highs range from the 50s in the mountains to around 70 in the southeast, with Lows from upper 30s to mid 40s coast. Friday's outlook calls for unseasonably warm, partly cloudy weather with a chance of showers, and cooler conditions Sunday. Morning 8 a m reading was 42 degrees at Friendship.

Powerful Storm Rakes Midwest From West to Great Plains
A storm with hurricane force winds and heavy snow moved across the western mountains and northern Great Plains. Travel warnings stretched from Washington to Nebraska and blizzard warnings covered Montana, with heavy snow warnings reaching Minnesota and Wisconsin. Sustained winds hit 100 mph in western Wyoming and gusts exceeded 100 mph in Livingston, Montana, toppling six mobile homes in Boulder, Colorado, and disabling two more.

Couple's Bodies Found In Hartwell Reservoir
Army Lt. Thomas K. Phillips and his wife Susan were found dead in the Hartwell Dam Reservoir after their car left Interstate 85 near the bridge into South Carolina. The couple had departed Fort McClellan Alabama on December 19 en route to Laurel Delaware, with a reward offered for information.

Post Offices poised to handle passport applications
U.S. Postal Service to offer passport applications at 90 post offices after successful tests in Houston and Midland. The Passport Application Assistance Program will relay applications to field offices for processing, with return by mail. By January end 34 offices in TX OK LA begin, then 33 more in FL AL MS in February, 19 in AR TN GA in March, and 13 in the Carolinas in April.
