Lawmakers urged to craft workable farm bill in careful debate
Washington officials in the Agriculture Department pressed for a practical crop control program and warned against hasty legislation. They favor longer debate to shape a farm bill funding subsidies totaling 650 to 750 million dollars, while President Roosevelt seeks to cap new spending at 100 million and find new revenue. Senator Lee proposed a voluntary allotment plan with direct market bounty and loans, backed by key Democrats and Republicans, potentially scaling down benefits above 600 dollars by as much as 95 percent if a farmer’s share tops 2,500.

Powell discuss unemployment relief set to begin January, with about 100000 monthly checks expected to ease hardship and fund larger state programs. The unemployment tax will rise from 1.8 to 2.7 percent to cover the payments.
