Planes Battle in Spanish War Over Madrid Front

Aged Man Faces Murder Charge in Newport News

Michael Ritter a 77 year old shopkeeper was jailed on murder charges after an 11 year old girl was killed and a companion wounded while they sketched on the sidewalk in front of his shop. He admitted the shooting but gave no motive. A juvenile officer said the man had complained of chalk marks and stones from neighbourhood youths.

November collections rise while state revenue falls short

Raleigh dispatch reports the State Revenue department collected 25,808,649.47 dollars for the first five months of the current fiscal year, down from 26,866,759.45 dollars the same period a year ago. November collections were 23.70 percent higher than those in November 1936.

City expects grant of PWA immediately for hydroelectric project

The High Point city council authorized the revised contract with Murray and Flood engineers and the mayor and city clerk signed it. An advance grant of 144000 for preliminary engineering is expected from PWA in Washington, with funds to begin work at the Styers dam site if the Supreme Court upholds the city’s right to proceed. Murray and Flood have already executed the contract.
