Chinese dispatches report over 1,000 civilians killed or wounded in a Japanese air raid on Hsiaoshan about 12 miles southeast of Hangchow. The bombardment left 1,100 houses destroyed and scores homeless.
Chinese air force mobilizes Russian built bombers in Hankow to halt Japanese advances. At least 20 bombers reach from Russia with possibly 280 more en route. Japanese claim 13 Chinese planes down near Nanking as two Chinese aircraft strike Shanghai. U S consulate in Shanghai fears for 13 Americans marooned inland. Local authorities announce six battalions will march through the international settlement in a victory parade.
Ashbourne Orange, grand champion steer of the 38th International Livestock Exposition, sold for 2.35 a pound totaling 2608.50 to Palmer House buyers Wilson and Company. Oklahoma A&M, exhibitor, receives the prize money. steer weighed 1110 pounds at sale, 1115 pounds at judging.
On December 2 1930 Congress heard Joseph P Kennedy urge prompt federal aid for trans oceanic air service to prevent foreign control. He asked for immediate support to establish American operators and a mediation board for shipping labor disputes, warning of hostile foreign airlines and unresolved labor tensions.
Henry Williams known as Flannel Foot eluded Scotland Yard for 25 years and pleaded guilty to 40 burglary counts at Middlesex sessions. Prosecutor Christmas Humphreys outlined the suspect’s method and items recovered, including forty seven keys and assorted tools. Williams was arrested Oct 2 in Ruislip after trailing him to a series of burgled residences.
Ford Motor Company and the CIO United Automobile Workers prepared for legal skirmishes as the St Louis assembly plant strike entered its second week. Ford amended its injunction petition naming 92 extra defendants to bar picketing, while the NLRB cited the company to a December 16 hearing on unfair labor practices. Milton W Johnson denied the charges.
Frank C. Monaghan a Pennsylvania showman faced a murder charge and $500 bond after a highway crash that killed Harry H. Davis of Winston-Salem and Lamberton. George Johnson whose wife was badly hurt swore the warrant in Lumberton. Davis also filed a $75 000 damages suit alleging criminal negligence.
Navy airmen from Virginia Beach report sighting a parachute inland a mile from the crash site after a plane carrying Aviation Cadet J. J. Jones and machinist’s mate Troy Blanton went down off Norfolk. Coast guards and base crews searched by sea and shore as wreckage washed ashore.
French Foreign Minister Yvon Delbos began a 17 day swing through Warsaw Krakow Bucharest Belgrade and Praha to secure Poland and the Little Entente nations keeping alliances with France. He aims to prevent Britain and France from yielding central Europe to Germany while pursuing a broader Western settlement.
Heavy snow fell in Henderson with four inches reported as the storm spread. Raleigh and other eastern towns recorded snow or mix, while Piedmont areas eyed favorable conditions for continued snowfall and colder temperatures tonight.
Edith Maxwell, former Wise County school teacher, sentenced to 20 years for killing her father Trigg Maxwell, surrendered at the Virginia prison with her brother. She and her mother and brother had lived on a Chesterfield County farm. Maj Price Youell said she will not work for 10 days as prison custom.
North Carolina Attorney General A. A. F. Seawell said the state would vigorously back any effort to obtain a rehearing of Carolina Aluminum's plan to build a $6 million hydroelectric plant near Tuckertown. The federal power commission ruled the Pee Dee River below the dam site is navigable, placing the project under federal authority.
John L. Lewis and William Green opened a high level labor conference in Washington to end a two year civil war between the CIO and AFL. They recessed at 4 p m with no agreement and no remarks to reporters. Officials suggest a possible plan to graft an industrial union section into the AFL framework or to create a self ruling department within the AFL while dissolving the CIO.
In Greensboro near Julian a patrol stopped a trailled truck revealing 203 cases of whiskey. Driver O M Davis 25 of Manchester Ay and passenger R T Shaffer 33 of High Point were charged with violating the prohibition law and released on $500 bonds each. A preliminary hearing was set for Saturday at 11 before Magistrate W S Lyon.
Paul N. Dwyer, 18, pleaded guilty to the slayings of James G. Littlefield and his wife during a six state death tour. He was sentenced immediately to life imprisonment at hard labor in Thomaston. Judge George Emery ordered confinement until natural life, with no chance for parole.
A $100,000 Concord high school building was burned to char, leaving only walls. A passerby saw flames in the auditorium at 10 p.m., and firefighters labored for hours to control the blaze. The school enrolls about 600 students.
Official word from the Potomac at Garden Key in the Dry Tortugas reports President Roosevelt's tooth infection is showing continued improvement. The Potomac and seven fishing companions anchored there last night, with Secretary James Roosevelt sending brief radio updates noting boats off for fishing after mail clearance and the President remaining for the night.
Washington Dec 2 The House leadership moved to force a vote on the wages and hours bill by mid December. Rep Mansfield rolled to sign as 218th petitioner amid cheers. Rep Smith was 217th. A Republican inquiry sought proof of statements alleging staff swap to secure a vote during the special session. McNary later questioned admin statements while Senate figures read letters from Wallace to bill authors.
Police escorted four C I O organizers to the city limits after about 100 people, many hosiery workers, mobbed the men's hotel entrance in Asheville North Carolina. Officers dispersed the crowd and the organizers were taken to safety following a protest at the Asheville Hosiery plant where eight workers had acted against C I O activities.
