Rockefeller told Time to probe Jackson staff
Vice President Nelson A Rockefeller urged Time Magazine in January to investigate Henry M Jackson staffers amid claims of Communist infiltration. He spoke off the record to about 40 Time reporters and executives and suggested scrutiny of Jackson's staff. Jackson called the remarks McCarthyist and demanded an apology while Rockefeller denied making charges. Time editors declined to comment, and no names were disclosed. The episode followed prior accusations linked to Goldwater and FBI denials of espionage in Congress.
