Trail of dreams to a ranger career at Sandburg Home
Backlund recalls a long path from cabin maid and teacher to a National Park Service ranger. She worked seasonal posts at Shenandoah Everglades Cape Hatteras and Mammoth Cave, then trained as a federal officer. Promotion brought interpretive programming duties, Alaska posting, and ultimately Sandburg Home superintendent duties with archive upgrades and goats as goodwill ambassadors. She credits persistence and pursuing the work she loved.
