FATE OF SCHOOLS DEPEND ON VOTING ONE MILL TAX
Morgan county voters—excluding Albany and Decatur—will decide on renewing a one mill school tax next Saturday July 11. The attorney general ruled Albany and Decatur cannot vote, despite desire to, due to constitutional provision allowing three additional mills for city schools. The tax funds county schools and maintains education parity as city schools have more funding from higher valuations. Supporters argue the small ten cent per hundred dollars, about one dollar per thousand, extends schooling by a month, funded largely by railroads, utilities, and non resident landowners. Endorsers say the tax does not raise overall county taxes and preserves equitable education for country children.
