Speaker Champ Clark announces the engagement of Miss Genevieve Clark to James Thompson. The ceremony is not dated in the available text.
Two Alabama prohibition conferences are set for next week. North Alabama Republicans meet in Birmingham at the Tutwiler to frame a state law agenda, while southern lawmakers gather in Montgomery at the Exchange. Prohibitionists claim 74 house votes and 25 of 35 senate votes in support as plans for a statewide bill accelerate for the January 18 inauguration.
The long awaited street lights have been erected and shine brightly each night. Citizens praise the illumination and improved appearance, noting only a few lights are installed so far, with City Commissioners planning more soon to cover the town.
Washington dispatch notes President Wilson turning 58 with messages from around the world. He spends the day in routine office work in the morning and dedicates the afternoon to his family, aside from a reunion with his immediate relatives.
J. D. Boon of Somerville R. 2 visited the city Thursday. W. C. Crow and family of Danville route 1 moved to Wartrace route 2 and will reside there in the future.
An arson-like dawn blaze at 2 am in Morgan County destroyed P. W. Williams General Merchandise and heavily damaged adjacent stores in the Pine Street block. Firefighters and townspeople saved other buildings with buckets and hoses, while losses included goods and damage to nearby establishments. The report also notes local society news, school licensing, a fox musket accident, and the death of J. W. Jones with burial in Decatur.
Local note from Decatur thanks L and N officials of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad for offering to send engines to assist in fighting a Sunday morning fire. Officials wired they had the fire under control and declined the aid. C A Ligon of Louisville, Ky was in the city visiting friends during the holidays.
Mrs. S. J. Kirkpatrick widow of Judge S. J. Kirkpatrick and sister of Bishop E. E. Hoss of the Southern Methodist Church was fatally burned Sunday night in Jonesboro Tennessee when her clothing caught fire before a warming grate. She died early Monday morning.
Dorothy Lindsey, daughter of Mr and Mrs J W Lindsey, died Wednesday night around 9 00 after a brief illness that began with a cold. Doctors were unable to save her. Funeral services were held Friday at 10 00 from the residence with Rev W W Scott officiating. Burial followed at the city cemetery. Jan 21 1890 Florence Herald notes twins born to Presiding Elder and Mrs E B Norton weighing 7 1 2 and 8 0 pounds born at midnight Sunday and invites them to claim 20th or 21st as birthday.
Montgomery Alabama December 29 The governor elect Charles Henderson says lawmakers must back his policies in all state matters. He asserts Democrats who nominated him for governor expect legislators to follow the platform he presented to the people and cooperate in enacting laws.
