An accident east of Guthrie Center sent a mother and four children to hospital with minor injuries. Philip Kepler of Adel was charged with failure to yield. Two separate county road crashes left two people with minor injuries while several others faced traffic charges.
Guthrie Center post office and other sites across the nation host an open house on Thursday between 2 and 4 pm to celebrate the launch of the United States Postal Service. Postmaster Stew Schwab says visitors will receive a souvenir envelope bearing both old and new insignia, with limited first day cancellation using stamps, marking the first nationwide availability of First Day covers in all US post offices.
Funeral services are set for Wednesday at the Fairmont Chapel in Broomfield Colorado for Wilbur Covault who died Sunday afternoon at 1 30 at the Veterans Hospital in Denver. Covault fell at his home in Sunny Acres Sunday morning and was taken to the hospital. Burial will be in Colorado. Survivors include two sons Gifford of Guthrie Center and Rex of Aurora Colorado, two daughters Mrs Norma Bloomfield of Denver and Mrs Margaret Webb of Golden Colorado, and ten grandchildren. Owen Covault of Guthrie Center is a brother. Mrs Covault died in April of this year.
Iowa State University extension economist Gene Futrell projects higher hog marketings in May and June with a 5 percent rise for July to September. Hog prices are expected around 17 to 19 dollars per hundredweight this month, peak near 23 in July, and average 18 to 19 dollars October through December. Weekly marketings July to September seen at about 1.3 million head, down from 1.8 million recently, and a cyclical downturn may continue into year end with a possible rebound next winter and spring barring overexpansion by late 1972/73.
The Adair executive board met to set regular meeting months and approve swimming lessons starting July 12 for children with registration from noon to 3 pm. Guthrie Township and Dinkla youths named to school lists, Morningside College Sioux City second semester. Panora district forecasts 38,000 plus expenses versus prior year 50,000, mill rate impact. Stuart girls urged to register for Day Camp at Stuart Conservation Park August 28 and send $8 to Heart of the Hawkeye Council in Des Moines.
Elwood Haves of Casey was among five Iowa volunteers awarded the Governor's Award for Meritorious Service at the 47th annual Iowa state fire school in Ames. He has served Casey fire volunteers for nearly 37 years and helped organize the Rural Community Fire Association while holding roles as fire chief president secretary and assistant chief.
Cindy Mikkelsen named recipient of a 3100 scholarship from the Tewa Association for Retarded Children funded by the statewide Honey Sunday project of the Towa Jaycees. She is Guthrie Cemer’s daughter and will attend Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville this fall.
A series of deaths in the area last week includes former residents and long-time workers. Obituaries note services in Panora Guthrie Center and Sac City with survivors listed, including children, grandchildren, and siblings. Contributions and interments took place at local cemeteries such as Union Cemetery and Resurrection.
Kesselring says first batch of feed grain payments totaling about 1.75 million dollars will be mailed this month. Nearly all checks should reach participants by July 15, with about 200 producers yet to certify for the program. Final notices were mailed last week and spot checks may follow after certification.
A Greene County court ruling last week exempted five senior housing projects as charitable enterprises. Plaintiffs, five Greene County housing corporations, argued the facilities meet charitable goals and are non profit. The projects, located in Stuart, Bayard, Menlo, Guthrie Center, Panora and Bagley, are funded by local contributions and FHA standards.
Sheriff Lester Petersen announced Bob Schafer will become a sheriff’s deputy on July 1. The 26 year old previously served as a county deputy at Lake Panorama and lake patrol, trained at the Iowa Police Academy, and fills a vacancy since March 1 after Dick Marshall left for Dallas County. The county seeks bids for a new deputy car to replace the one used by engineers, the old car’s disposition not disclosed.
Five persons were charged with disturbing the peace and fined in S E Robinson’s JP court after arrest at Happy Acres Friday afternoon. They were identified as Max Crabbs and Steve Osting of Des Moines, and Bob Crown, John Stonehocker, and James Merical, all of Linden. Merical also faced reckless driving and a 30 day sentence. Sheriff reports the group drove across a golf course under construction and tried to flee Lake area personnel before their car missed a turn and hit a bank.
Four Guthrie Center men were fined 300 each plus costs on a charge of making beer available to minors after a district court hearing Monday morning. The defendants were Mike Bell Neil Merryman Dale West and Gary Hansen. They were arrested and bound over to the grand jury on beer violation charges filed earlier this month against ten additional individuals.
Marilyn Middleton a 1970 Guthrie Center graduate completed a secre tarial course in Des Moines and is now employed with the Internal Revenue Service. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Don Middleton.
