Lynn Mobley Named Panora Beef Queen at Guthrie County Picnic

Lynn Mobley a sophomore at Iowa State University was selected Panora Queen of Guthrie County Beef Producers at the annual Mitchell Park picnic Sunday evening. Miss Mobley succeeds Cindy McCarty as 1970-71 queen. first runner up was Gail Eischeid. About 250 people attended. Lonnie Blass presented the queen and candidates as the DJ's provided entertainment.

Crippled Kids Clinic Slated In Carroll School

The State Service for Crip pled Children will hold a diagnostic clinic at Kuemper High School in Carroll on Thursday July 15. Eligible are children under 21 with chronic or crippling conditions from Audubon Carroll Crawford Dallas Greene Guthrie Ida Monona Sac and Shelby counties. Examinations by pediatrics orthopedics psychology speech and hearing physical therapy nursing and medical social work teams will be offered with no fee. Referrals should be sent to the SSCC office with appointment details.

Bonita Thomas Service Held Here Saturday

A former Guthrie Center resident Bonita Thomas died Thursday in Des Moines at age 51. Her funeral service was held Saturday at Reidelman Funeral Home in Guthrie Center with Rev. J Milton Kinney officiating. Interment followed at Union Cemetery. She was a niece of Bonnie Carr.

Guthrie County Students Among Mankato State Graduates

Three Guthrie county students at Mankato State College Minnesota were among 1125 graduates last Friday. Marcia Lewis earned Cum Laude in nursing and her husband Neil Lewis earned a physical education degree, both from Bavard. George Hopkins of Guthrie Center earned a sociology degree.

Beers Charged After Youths Questioned at Guth Farm Party

Ten youths from Guiline Center were arrested on beer violation charges and possession by minors after a party at a vacant Guth farm. Bill Slater Joyce Hayes and Beverly Benton faced fines, while Neil Merryman Dale West Michael Bell and Gary Hansen were bound over to the grand jury. Janet Schwab JoAnn Siebert, both 16, were sent to juvenile authorities for probation.

Place Arsonist on Probation for two Months

A 14 year old Guthrie Center boy who admitted setting fires in the Methodist church basement two weeks ago was turned over to juvenile probation officer Robert Halterman. Halterman placed the youth on unofficial probation until mid August after the youth was picked up following three separate fires in the church basement. He said he started them because he was upset about not being able to attend a church camp trip.

Eisenhower Silver Dollar sales start June 8

Applications for the new Eisenhower Silver dollars may be picked up starting Friday June 8. Orders after July 1 will not be accepted. Uncirculated coins cost 3 with a limit of five per person while proof coins cost 10. Coins are high relief and struck twice by polished dies. Several months may pass before orders are filled. Each order must include a check or money order.

No Salary Cut For Officials In Guthrie County

Guthrie County elected officials will not face pay reductions after lawmakers passed a bill freezing compensation at 1969 levels for 40 counties with reduced populations from the 1970 census. Without action, about 800 officials would have endured cuts. maximum losses could have reached 50 dollars for the auditor, treasurer, recorder and clerk.

Guthrie Center gets new rural housing project at Bradford Angus Ranch

A new home will be constructed on the Bradford Angus Ranch near Guthrie Center starting Thursday with work beginning at 7 AM and finishing by afternoon. Details on price and appearance will be provided elsewhere in this edition. Wilson Clothing and Shoes opens in a new location across from Feilmeyer Hardware, continuing to offer mens and boys clothing and family shoes.

Boy Dies in Adair Driveway Accident

A 24 month old Georgia visiting child, Joseph B Rowland, son of Bryant and Margaret Rowland, was struck and killed by a pickup entering a driveway in Adair on Saturday. Harold Fox, 61, driving the pickup, failed to see the child, investigators said. The boy died en route to Guthrie county hospital after being brought there by the Adair Emergency unit.

Hick Winner Second Time for KC Trip

Guthrie Center Chamber of Commerce awards its fathers day promotion winners Joe Hick and Jay Sheley. They join 38 others for a Kansas City bus trip July 17 and 18 to see a Cleveland game and a Detroit doubleheader with cost 24 dollars.

Adair Area Hit By High Winds Rain and Hail

Weather damaged Adair area with downed trees blocking streets and glass breakage in several businesses. Electric crews restored service after hours long outage. Guthrie Center area reported 0.52 inches of rain and hail. Panora also saw similar totals. Bayard and Wichita had different rainfall readings.

Two Drivers Charged After Traffic Mishaps

Two drivers were charged with failure to have their vehicles under control after accidents in the county last week. Sheriff Lester Petersen named John Moorhead Perry and Charlotte Kay Alberts. Stuart Moorhead was charged after his car sideswiped a vehicle driven by Paul Brus. The Alberts girl notified the sheriff about an earlier crash 314 miles east of Stuart. A passenger in her car, Cathy Karsten Dexter, sustained a back injury. The 1963 Alberts car and the Moorhead vehicle were demolished with about $600 damage to the Moorhead auto.

Local Churches Hold Services at Springbrook

Campers at Springbrook State Park can attend Sunday services on the hill east of the spillway. Ministers from county churches will conduct services at 9:30 a.m. with no offering. List of pastors and dates includes Marilyn Van Gelder Guthrie Center June 27 and Ora Reep Bayard September 5 among others.

Adult Swim Lessons Begin At Guthrie Center Pool

Adult water safety instructors will run eight to ten lessons starting about July 5 at the Guthrie Center pool. Classes may be Monday or Tuesday evenings or both, with a $1 session fee plus pool charges. Season ticket holders may use their passes.

Courthouse to close for statewide audit workshop

Several offices in the Guthrie county courthouse will be closed Wednesday June 23 while officers and employees attend a Des Moines workshop conducted by State Auditor Lloyd Smith. The recorder clerk of courts treasurer auditor and assessor are among those affected.

FLBA Expands to Four Counties Merges with Perry Jefferson

Stockholders of the Federal Land Bank Association of Perry and Jefferson approve a merger effective July 1 1971 with headquarters in Perry. The combined association will offer long term mortgage financing to farmers in Greene Guthrie Dallas and Boone Counties with a field contact point in Jefferson at the new USDA building on Highway. William Sleha of Perry will head the merged operation Alten will serve as fieldmen and Catherine Webb as office assistant. The Perry FLBA holds over 25 million in loans for more than 1100 members with a cooperative, member owned structure.
