Terrific explosion of fly wheel at Shelbyville Water and Light
The Shelbyville Water and Light plant suffered a catastrophic fly wheel burst about 1 am Monday. William Ballard, a 21 year old night engineer, died in the engine room as debris and steam filled the space, with $6,000 in plant damage reported. Pieces of the wheel were found blocks away and throughout the factory, and the wheel’s rim fragments scattered across ground and structures. Ballard’s death is believed due to scalding steam after the blast. Superintendent Harding cites wheel defects as the probable cause.
