Sunday marked the 76th birthday of Uncle Edwin White with a large family dinner at his West First Street home. Relatives and close friends gathered for a warm meal and a joyful social time in honor of a widely respected local citizen.
Decatur county man F. L. Mandlove leads a large department at the John Shillito Co in Cincinnati. After seventeen years with the firm he also serves as buyer and has made four East business trips this season. Twenty years ago he taught in Clay township before returning to visit Burney relatives last week. Local advertisers invite support and patronage to sustain trade.
A Greensburg boy, Rev. Earl Riley, has been chosen pastor of the Vernon Methodist church after graduating with honors from Moores Hill College. He arrived Friday, visited home folks Saturday, and assumed duties on Sunday, with friends predicting a bright future in his ministry.
Captain C J Stewart veteran of the 117th Indiana regiment died after an amputation of his right leg following wounds in the Chattaooga campaign. A former city contractor and high school architect, he was 79 and uncle to local residents. Funeral held in Cincinnati with burial at Spring Grove.

The Red Men of Pequannock Tribe held their annual memorial Sunday afternoon. Members gathered at the wigwam and paraded to court house park where Rev. Fred R. Davies of Charlestown delivered the memorial address. Davies spoke of Red Manism and the order’s lessons of freedom friendship and charity. The procession then went to South Park cemetery where BRO. WILL C. EHRHARDT read the deceased list and gave a moving address followed by a prayer and floral tributes at the graves.
At about three Saturday morning Albert Fisher on West Washington woke to a burglar in his house. Fisher pursued and secured a shotgun as officers arrived to find the thief had escaped through a window tearing lace curtains. No property was taken.
The United Brethren pact to build a new frame church house two miles south of St Paul. Contractor Ed Dille prepared plans for a 36 by 40 foot structure with a 60 foot tower. The auditorium follows a modern plan and interior will be up to date. Notable county citizens form the congregation and Rev E P Day gathered over one thousand dollars in a single day last week in subscriptions.
Rev James B Lathrop officiated at the county clerk office wedding of Leroy Wolf and Miss Nellie C McAhren at noon Saturday. The couple, longtime Waynesburg residents, are described as splendid young people with many friends who wish them happiness and prosperity.
Mrs Walter McElroy celebrated the fifty ninth birthday anniversary at her North Anderson street home on Monday. A bountiful feast followed at noon with her children and grandchildren present. She remains a well preserved woman with many friends wishing her continued happiness.
Word reached town of the death of Mrs. Helen Whipple Friday evening at her daughter Mrs. R. P. Lamoor’s home in Dabney. She had recently undergone surgery for a tumorous growth followed by dropsical trouble and died after a period of suffering. A respected former citizen, she moved to Dabney last March and was buried Sunday at Union Cemetery. She was fifty two.
W S Johnson and Charles Edkins spent a day along Little Flat Rock river chasing minnows and fish. They finally caught a few sunfish and tied the catch to L N Marlow's door knob as a playful display of generosity to a man who loves fishing.
Farmers at McCoys organized the Decatur County Game and Protective Association to curb illegal hunting and protect local game including squirrels and quails. Members will file charges against violators, fund prosecutions, and help enforce laws. officers were elected and a second meeting set for June 29 to adopt bylaws.
