Marine Lance Corporal James L. Kingery son of Mr and Mrs Darrell Kingery of Greene received the Air Medal in Vietnam on April 22. Kingery, a Greene Community High School graduate, serves in Headquarters and Maintenance Squadron 12, First Marine Aircraft Wing. He joined the service in September 1966.
Junior high vocal department presents the musical On the Range in two acts tonight at 8:00 in the high school gym. Directed by Harold Blosser the operetta features Cowboys Indians and robbers in a Grand Canyon Arizona setting as college seniors vacation before graduation.
Stuart Marsh, on two week leave from the U.S. Navy, visited his parents Mr and Mrs Clinton Marsh. He left Monday for Port Hueneme California and expects to be sent to Vietnam within two to three weeks. Stuart was honored at a family dinner Sunday at the home of Mr and Mrs Ralph Marsh with forty one relatives in attendance.
Minnesota Twins scouts will lead a free baseball clinic for boys ages 9 to 18 at Decorah High School field on Saturday May 17 at 9:00 a.m. If weather delays indoor gathering at Thomas Roberts gymnasium. Angelo Giuliani will direct with assistants John Mauer and Bill Kane. The Twins provide bats and balls. participants should bring gloves.
The local Jaycees elected Jim Shoemaker as president and Don Feldman as vice president among a slate of officers to assume duties June 1. Other officers include Jim Menken state director, Jim Richards secretary, Gary Rottler treasurer, Dick Jaspers internal director, and Gene Ross external director. They planned a July 6 town and country barbecue and a horse show. They approved a $25 contribution to the Sisty-plus Club and thanked Archie Raymond, Francis Teeple, and Schroeder Concrete for tire, sand, and related donations.
Noble Wamsley brother of Mrs. Jean Montgomery of Greene died Friday in Minneapolis where he resided Funeral services were held there Tuesday He had lived in Butler County until 1920 and later moved to Minneapolis Survivors include his wife Julia and two children
Larry Lester led the Ramblers to a second-place finish at the Osage sectional boys golf tournament earning a district berth in Decorah. Lester shot 41 and 41 for 82, while runner up John Ausen of Rockford posted 83 in regulation after a playoff with Jim Turbold of Cresco. Other scores included Cresco 342 in regulation, Mason City Newman 352, Osage 361, Rockford 367, Riceville 410, and Notre Dame Cresco 424.
Youth in Greene are invited to enroll in junior lifesaving from June 16 to 27 and July 7 to 18, with new age rules. Junior class is for ages 1 to 14 or grades 6 to 9, while senior class is for ages 15 or older or grade 10 and up. Registration is at Mrs. Ruths office in the high school, with a preliminary swim test and the required textbook.
The Post Office announces Mailbox Improvement Week from May 19 through May 24. The effort emphasizes safe, conveniently located rural mailboxes with clear owner names visible to carriers, right-side placement, and painted rust-free boxes to improve delivery service.

Fireman Apprentice Duane R. Leavens USN, son of Mr and Mrs Duane E Leavens, serves aboard the automated amphibious cargo ship USS Durham at Newport News Virginia. The ship will be commissioned in May as the crew trains in Norfolk in unit sections for classroom and practical instruction. The Durham features a fully automated engineering plant requiring four men in the machinery room to operate propulsion electrical and auxiliary systems.
May 11 to 18 marks Soil Stewardship Week with churches nationwide observing the theme Confronting the Issues. John R. Klahsen, chairman of the Butler Soil Conservation District, urges residents to protect soil and water resources, noting growing pollution concerns and the impact of private lands on community well being.
Medalist Jan Saltzman of Cedar Falls shot 96 to win the girls golf sectional in Greene and earn a trip to the district tournament. Runnerup Shirley Adelmund of Parkersburg totaled 101 and also advances to districts.
Mrs. Elmer Mennenga received word on Monday of the death of her father Alessando Palpon, 90, at Berona, Italy. He is survived by three daughters, two in Italy and Mrs. Carmen Mennenga of Greene, and one granddaughter, Sara Mennenga of Greene.
The Greene Ramblers scored 18 points in the district boys track meet to place seventh among sixteen teams as five local boys advance to the state meet at Linn-Mor in Marion. Qualifiers include Jim Shultz in the mile, Steve Hildebrand in the 440 yard dash, and the medley relay of Debner, Stuntz, Jerry Shultz, and Jim Shultz.
Mr and Mrs Larry Wihim of Charles City welcomed a daughter on Mothers Day May 11 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital. The baby Lisa Kaye weighed 7 pounds 542 ounces. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Howard Burroughs and Mr and Mrs Alphonse Wihim.
Funeral services for 64 year old William Jay Metz were held May 3 at St James Lutheran Church with Rev Donald Loots officiating. Burial followed at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City. Metz born June 24, 1904, son of William and Cora Metz, married twice, lived in Mason City area, retired from Hotel Hanford, survived by wife Waneta, son Leland, daughter Donna, stepson Donald Wessels, one brother Merle, seven sisters, 16 grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Newman defeated the Ramblers 6 to 1 as Mason City High played here. Jerry Shultz pitched four innings, Greene had four hits including a double, and Stuntz finished with two innings. Mason City will meet the Ramblers here on Friday May 16.
Immigration authorities arrested two Butler County prisoners on U S Highway 20 near Aplington after three day passes into the United States expired. Lacking English or identification, they were held in the Butler County jail for investigation before being sent to Omaha and then Mexico.

Ramblerettes scored 438, Cedar Falls 441, Hampton 452, Parkersburg 471, Rockford 490. team members Sue Astor Melinda Drakle Jane Mehblan Pattie Rutz Mary Rottler Sue Maxson with coach Bill Garner.
Butler County Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Committee Chairman Kenneth E. Hart reports a large signup in wheat and feed grain programs. About 1532 farms with 135,482 base acres participate, with 48,737 acres diverted and 29,800 acres diverted for payments. National totals show record participation and high allotment percentages across wheat and feed grain programs.
Eight Ramblerettes advanced to the state track meet after district competition at Dumont last Saturday. Greene tied for third with Bristow and Cal Community School at Latimer, earning 24 points. Drake University hosts the state meet in Des Moines this Saturday May 11, with participants including Melinda Drake Jane McRoberts Lois Rover Debra Frascht Carol Riggins Mary McRoberts Nancy Shultz Judy Lantz and others.
Claire Curtis was discharged Thursday after a check up at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
Everett Hudson becomes the employment representative at the State Employment Office and will be in Greene Tuesday mornings from 9 10 a m to 12 00 noon. He replaces Joe Keeney who has moved to the Davenport office.
Butler County ASCS office in Allison offers Golden Eagle Passports for 7 dollars covering a private family vehicle entry to National Forests and National Parks. The pass excludes concession and overnight camping fees and is valid April 1, 1969 to March 31, 1970 for facilities across 46 states and DC.
John Vernon Gersema son of Mr and Mrs John Gersema arrived home from Vietnam Friday May 9 and has completed his tour of duty. He had been stationed in Vietnam since July 1967 with a thirty day leave in May 1968.
