Newman Defeated Rambler Trackmen in Dual Meet

The Greene Ramblers lost to Mason City Newman High School 73 to 65 in a track dual last week. Wendell Stuntz double winner with 117 ft 5 in discus and 25.2 in 220 yd dash plus mile medley leg. Jim Shultz won the mile and ran on two relays. Steve Nildebrand took 440 yd dash and ran on two relays. Gary Debner contributed three relay wins and the high jump at 5 ft 6 in. Other placers included Dan Eimers in two mile, Bruce Litterer in high jump and long jump, Jong Jump in low hurdles, Jerry Shultz in multiple relays, Steve Van Dyke in shot and discus, Rod Truitt in pole vault, Marvy McBurney in high hurdles, Howard Brinkman in 440/long distance, John Shultz and Dennis Ratcher in 28 yd open run. Ramblers also at Iowa Falls Tuesday and district meet at Blairsburg Friday May 9, with regular season ending May 13 at Rockford.

Butler County towns raise funds for March of Dimes

Butler County towns contributed 522.85 to the March of Dimes in the recent campaign. IOOF Lodge of Shell Rock added 74.00, bringing their long aid to over 900.00. Mrs. William Schneiderman of Allison thanked all contributors for the support.

Greene High Band Wins Sixth Straight Division I Rating

The Greene High School Concert Band, 72 players plus six chaperones and Director Ray Holtz, earned a sixth consecutive Division I rating at the state contest in Britt held last Saturday. Selections included Mount of Might by Eric Osterling and Prelude Overature by Jules Massenet arranged by Lucien Caillier. Judges praised the band's preparation and interpretation.

Grassley Doubts On State Legislature Reapportionment Plan

The Ramblers defeated Fredericksburg 7 to 0 as Greene and pitching duo Jerry Shultz and Dick Stuntz limited the opposition to a single hit apiece. Shultz walked and Brunsma tripled in three in the third, with Stuntz adding late scoring support as defensively the Ramblers turned two double plays.

Jaycees Win Highest State Award at Convention

The Greene Jaycees earned the Bob Cronk Award at the State Jaycee Convention in Waterloo April 25 27 with local president Jim Menken receiving the honor from state president Gene Maddox. Other Greene members Gordie Menken and Norm Graven attended as Region II members led by a new state president Roger Poppen. The chapter joined 78 of 234 Jaycee chapters to win the award, after Region II led Parade of Regions. Local services included gifts to Vietnam servicemen, building a highway rest area, and several projects such as Olympic Torch 68 and the Halloween Parade.

Senate debates election reform and state funding bids

State Senator Vernon Kyhl reports Senate action on Senate file 665 a Republican election reform bill expanding residency rules candidate qualifications voter registration and pay raises for election workers. The Senate also passed a resolution urging a Constitutional Convention and approved a $91.4 million annual appropriation for state universities plus migrant housing and Medicaid fixes. Next week a truck fee bill awaits House approval and review of reciprocity issues by transit trucks.

Local Kindergarten Open House For Grandparents

Greene Community Schools held an open house for grandparents on May 1 with nearly one hundred attending from Decorah Riceville Belmond Charles City New Hampton Shell Rock Hampton Dougherty Allison Aredale Bristow Marble Rock Clarksville and Greene. Grandparents toured the kindergarten, viewed student work, and enjoyed a program of songs poems a May pole dance and rhythm band followed by refreshments served by Room Mothers and Future Teachers from the high school assisting with activities.
