Des Moines Sunday Register features Jerry Knight reporting on Burlington banning bingo for money or prizes. The move halts activities for seniors who gathered for bingo sessions, with criticism over penalties and concerns about tolerated behaviors elsewhere.
Mr and Mrs David Krumm of Iowa City announce the birth of daughter Melissa Jane born on Monday May 19. She weighs 7 pounds 14 ounces and is the first grandchild for Mr and Mrs Charles Ray of Greene. Grandparents also include Mr and Mrs Duane Krumm of Center Point.
Robert Fischer of Greene announces Clean-Hoe, a new home use herbicide safe for vegetables, flowers, strawberries, and around ornamentals. The finely granulated, orange and blue pouch protects 100 sq ft or 300 ft of rows, is applied after cultivating, and lasts through the season with one application. Sold only in retail stores for 1969 with limited supplies.
Riverside Cafe bowling team captured the 4th Barth Chevrolet Trophy by defeating Stanton Live Stock 2982 to 2809 in the finals on Thursday May 15. Riverside players Owen Adams 460 Bob Kelm 457 Dan Weyand 467 Bob Fenneman 483 and Gerald Stephenson 566 led the victory while Stanton Live Stock scorers Ken Rodman 451 J. T. Truitt 438 Dick Rohwerder 470 Charles Starkweather 513 and Elmer Stock 520 contributed to the close final.
Henry O. Knock of Parkersburg has been appointed to the Butler County Selective Service board. He was born in Butler County, served eleven years in the U S Navy from 1935 to 1946, and now farms near Parkersburg. He is a member of the American Legion.
Pfc Charles L Gallmeyer of the U S Marine Corps is on a fifteen day leave with relatives at Greene and Perrin Park. He will report back for duty at Cherry Point North Carolina on Sunday May 25. A family picnic was held in his honor with attendees from Aplington Nora Springs and Greene.
The Greene Ramblers lost 5 to 2 to the Mason City Mohawks on Friday in a six inning game shortened by rain. Dick Stuntz started well, allowing one unearned run through five, but a fifth inning burst broke the game open. Jerry Shultz and Gary Johnson produced Greene’s only late runs, with Johnson clearing the bases on a triple and scoring on a wild pitch. Warren Johnson had Greene’s other hit.
Douglas Ruffridge son of Mr and Mrs Donovan Ruffridge honored with the Forest City Lions Club Sportsmanship Award at Waldorf College Awards Day in Forest City He played split end on the 1968 Waldorf football squad second baseman on the 1968 and 1969 baseball teams and also participated in intramural basketball

Also listed are salaries, department costs, license revenues, court and attorney expenses, and road, mental health, education, and aid expenditures for the year.
Mrs Ernest Gist, mother of Mrs John Hamilton, is back in Arnold's Park after a three week hospital stay in Spirit Lake following major surgery.
Members of the American Legion Auxiliary will sell poppies Friday and Saturday this week end. They will go house to house on Friday and in the business district on Saturday. The proceeds aid disabled American veterans. Mrs Edward Helt uod is chair man but illness moves duties to Mrs Letha Groothuis.
The Butler County Association for Retarded Children reports 2500.82 contributed during the county drive. Officers elected at May meeting: Floyd Senne Allison president, Robert Ostercamp Aplington vice president, Dr Wabur Thomas Parkersburg secretary, Mrs Paul Jansen Parkersburg treasurer.
The Annual Revue produced by high school students will be held tonight at 7:45 in the high school auditorium. The program features the state band mixed choir folk songs German band and soloists. refreshments will be served. Awards night follows Friday at 8:00 with athletic music and other awards presented.
Clarence Luck has been selected as the water and sewer commissioner for the Town of Greene at a town council meeting on May 19 at the fire station. He will assume duties on May 26 and plans to move with his wife and two children to Greene.

The Greene post office closes Memorial Day with no rural service.
Iowa Department of Revenue reports third quarter 1968 retail sales and use tax. Butler County total was 130,120.23 with Greene leading towns at 28,616.44. Other towns: Parkersburg 22,536.71 Allison 14,984.94 Clarksville 14,259.90 Dumont 11,980.70 Aplington 10,848.56 Shell Rock 8,317.67 New Hartford 6,806.01 rural 7,877.42 under 300 population 3,275.45 and non-permit 616.33.

Four local students graduated from Waldorf College in Forest City as a two year junior college. Degrees awarded to John Barth Douglas Ruffridge Jim Dralle and Craig Kemming. Baccalaureate service Sunday morning featured Dr Sigvald D Faulke and Dana College president Dr C Madsen.
Mrs Senne traveled to Fountain Colorado to meet her new grandson born Monday May 19 weighing 7 pounds 3 ounces. He joins sister Charlotte with Thomas Massey of Fort Mills South Carolina and Mr and Mrs Hugo Senne of Greene as relatives.
The University of Iowa Hawkeye Concert Bands will present a joint program on Wednesday May 21 at 8 00 p m in North Music Hall Iowa City open to the public no tickets required The Black Band directed by Stan Schleuter will perform then Hawkeye Band No 1 the Gold Band will follow The program includes Elegy for a Young American Etudes for Band third movement and Barman and Bailey's Favorite conducted by Don Hamilton both graduate students from Greene and son of Mr and Mrs G E Hamilton
The local Jaycees filled 33 sandboxes on April 26 and plan another fill on June 14. Call 823-4238 or 823-5506 to have a box or tire filled or refilled. Tires are provided at $1 per box. Donald McGee entered Mercy Hospital in Mason City on Tuesday and will undergo surgery on Wednesday at 8 00 a.m. The procedure is scheduled and a brief hospital stay is anticipated.
Paul W Naumann will graduate during the 39th commencement at Campion Jesuit High School Prairie du Chien Wisconsin he is the son of Mr and Mrs W Naumann and will receive a Latin Scientific diploma Campion is a residential college prep school run by Jesuits.
The Ramblerettes traveled to Drake University Des Moines for the State Girls Track Meet. They set several records lowering times but failed to reach finals. Carol Riggins ran 8 meter low hurdles in 13.0 seconds and the shuttle relay teams posted 43.6 and 56.5 in their events. Lois Rover finished the 60 yard dash in 7.8 seconds on the new Tartan track.
Mrs Henry Schmidt was taken to Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City on May 12 after a fall in her home fractured a vertebra. She is listed as a patient in room 234.
The Butler County Selective Service System lists seven men called for induction in May plus one volunteer. Ronald L. Van Ellen of Aplington Merlin F. Hinders and Roger E. Hinders of Clarksville, and David R. Mulder of Parkersburg reported for induction May 5. Steven M. Olmstead volunteered. Dennis G. Ascher of Greene and Stanley R. Gerdes, formerly of Aplington and now in Omaha, Nebraska, reported May 19. David E. Eck of Humboldt, formerly of Shell Rock, enlisted in the Army. Bruce H. Johnson of Greene joined the Air Force. Steven J. Reichert of Shell Rock enlisted in the Navy for four years. The June call for Butler County is for four men.
Mrs Mary Poppe was admitted to St Marys Hospital in Rochester Minnesota for medical treatment and is a patient in room 112 on the third floor. Mrs Bruce Banwell is receiving a check up at University Hospital in Iowa City and was admitted Tuesday.
John Marks, local dealer for Clay Equipment Corporation in Allison, is honored as a member of the Clay 500 Club for 1963. The Cedar Falls firm says the award recognizes increased sales, solid installation and service facilities, and strong customer relations. Roger Clay, the company president, announced the honor.
Mrs. Antjer Ennen, 75, mother of Fred Ennen of Greene, died May Uth in Wellinghausen Germany. Survived by son and daughter-in-law Fred and wife, two daughters Johann Janssen of Wellinghausen Germany and Harry Johnson of Allison, and nine grandchildren.
