Iowa 14th special session called over reapportion
The 14th Iowa special session convened February 24 called by Gov. Harold Hughes to consider reapportioning the General Assembly after a three member federal court panel ordered timely redistricting. The court mandated a temporary plan with a path to a permanent one requiring identical approval by two sessions and a voter referendum. The move spurred three special elections, all won by Democrats in Poweshiek Johnson and Monroe counties, altering House seats and prompting debate on appealing the ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court.
