From reports on last Tuesday's championship fight to a pool project update, readers hear mixed views. The letter laments debt from a tax cut while urging safeguards for average workers and calls for action against pet poisonings damaging Greene.
Time is short for landowners to order trees and shrubs for wildlife plantings from the State Forest Nursery near Ames. Orders accepted until the nursery supply runs out, usually mid March. The program funds up to 80 percent cost sharing with ASCS offices in each county.
Mr. and Mrs. Glenn E. Kessler returned home Friday morning from a three week vacation. They visited Kalamazoo Michigan with Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Adams and spent two weeks with Mrs. Ray Garrison and family in Orlando Florida.
Clyde Wells Harper born July 29 1881 in Bennedette Township Butler County died February 29 in Greene at home. He married Rose Matthews July 4 1911 in Hampton. They farmed long then retired to Greene twelve years ago. Survived by wife six children two brothers Harley Adel Clu Fontana California one sister Civil Tubman Orthind Oregon. Funeral Tuesday 2:00 at Williams Mortuary Rev G F Butler off. Burial Dumont Cemetery.
The Greene Sportsman's Club will hold its annual oyster stew next Tuesday evening March 10 at the Veteran's Club. Dinner starts at 6 30 with oyster stew and a smorgasbord followed by two sportsman films.
The Greene Fire Department responded to three grass fires over the weekend and Monday. Saturday morning a fire started behind the city dump. In the afternoon a grass fire at Clyde Stuntz farm east of Greene spread to turkey shelters causing damage. Monday noon a tractor exhaust sparked a hay field fire that spread into a nearby corn field at Ernest Botterbrodt farm east of Greene.
Albert Barth is back home in Rochester Minnesota after a month at St Marys Hospital undergoing major surgery. He will return Thursday for a follow up. Mrs Cliff Crane also returns home from St Josephs Mercy Hospital in Mason City after several weeks with major surgery.
High school music departments present a concert in the school auditorium next Wednesday evening March 11 at 7 45 featuring a 70 piece concert band a mixed chorus and girls glee club The Music Mothers provide refreshments and admission is at the door The program includes songs by the chorus glee club and band with solo and instrumental numbers and Martha Stuntz highlighted on flute Everyone is invited to attend.
Expenditures for public assistance in Butler County reach 29199 for February. Statewide payments total 4122726. County disbursements include 215 Old Age Assistance cases 20595, 49 Aid to Dependent Children cases 6190, 12 Aid to the Blind recipients 1608, and 10 disabled persons 806.
About 100 residents attended a public hearing at the community center on relocating Highway 14. Glenn Doty and Raymond Kassel led the session with slides, fielding questions on access, right of way, detours, and flood flow. Construction is planned to start in spring 1966, and funds availability could accelerate timelines.
J Tatum reports the $700 target to sponsor a foreign student at Greene has been met and forms sent to the International Field Service. Donor list includes Greene Commercial Club High School Student Council PEO Lutheran Church Church of Christ and many individuals. Free will church collections totaled several dollars per church.

Zeno William Neuroth, 49, of Wesley Iowa, appeared in district court Monday March 2, pleaded guilty to reckless driving after a February 10 arrest by Sheriff Boomgarden following a two car crash on Highway 3 near Allison. He paid a $100 fine plus $8 costs.
The Greene Commercial Club gathers at the Community Center next Friday evening March 6 at 7 30 for a discussion on summer promotion plans A Town Council representative will discuss the swamplups pool project and 1964 dues will be accepted at the meeting
John McWhirter of Allison reports Butler County bond activity with $159,906 in sales, 18 percent of its 1964 quota of $885,420, while Iowa totals $15,231,680, 13 percent of its $114 million goal. The 1964 savings bonds titled Operation Security run May 1 to July 2.
Machinist’s mate fireman apprentice David Ipsen, son of Mr and Mrs Harry J Ipsen of Greene Ohio, serves aboard the anti-submarine warfare carrier USS Bennington. The ship departed February 19 for a six month Western Pacific cruise and will visit Hawaii for training before heading to Japan and the Far East as part of the Seventh Fleet, returning to homeport in early August.
Funeral services for Robert F. Berry 77 were held at St Marys Church Greene with Father Joseph Murphy officiating a Requiem High Mass. Born October 9 1886 he died February 20 in Waverly from cerebral thrombosis. Survivors include his wife Margaret Knapp two daughters Mrs Charles McGinn Plainfield Mrs Warne Fitspatrick Waverly and son Raymond New Hampton ten grandchildren one great grandchild and a sister Mrs Lewis Murphy. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Paul Flora of Greene is pictured with a 12 pound 29 inch red fish he caught in Palma Sola Bay near Bradenton Florida. Mr and Mrs Flora are spending the winter months vacationing in Florida.

New resident Mr and Mrs Marvin Chapman welcomed daughter Dixie Ruth born Sunday February 23 at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City. The infant weighed 14 ounces and the family returned home with Dixie on Wednesday.
Mr and Mrs Roy Henline returned home Wednesday from a three week vacation to Texas and Florida. They visited Mrs Henlines brother in law and sister in Sherman Texas and Tampa Florida. En route home they visited her parents Mr and Mrs William Grusy in Secor Illinois.
Mr and Mrs Lyle Maxson have returned home after two months with their daughter and son in law Mr and Mrs D J McMahon and family in Santa Barbara California.
