Doug Trees placed second in the 95 pound division at the Class A State Wrestling Tournament. Coach Max Dougherty guided him to a historic school finals appearance with 26 victories and 2 losses. Losses came to Steve Funk of Osage. the two had split prior meetings, Funk winning the rubber match.
Miss Mary Kyle passed away early this morning at Bristow home of Joe Kyle. She had been in failing health for several years. Survivors include brother Joe and sisters Monica and Berniece Kyle. Funeral services are pending with Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge.
The Iowa Republican dinner at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines on April 16 tickets at $25 went on sale this week. Main speaker is Charles H. Percy, candidate for U S Senator in Illinois, praised as the boy wonder of business by GOP leader Robert D. Ray. Percy, former Bell and Howell president, is running against Sen. Paul Douglas in 1966.
Urban W. Davis 84 of Mason City died Saturday morning in St. Josephs Mercy Hospital. A former Greene resident married Emma Brunner in 1901 who died in 1908. He moved to Mason City in 1910 worked 28 years for Marshall Swift. Survived by daughter Enid Finch, two grandchildren, four great grandchildren, one great great grandchild. Funeral Monday Feb 28 at 3 p.m. Major Memorial Chapel burial Memorial Park Cemetery.
Greene Community High School selects cast for the junior class play Bull in a China Shop directed by Mrs Gary Oglee The comedy follows six old maids in a boarding house in love with a middle aged detective named O Finn The performances are scheduled for March 29 and 30 with Marilyn Walker as student director The cast includes Tom Tindall Ricky Knight Allan Whiteside Arlen Janssen Don Gabe Carolyn Kehoe Kathy Pattschull Genie Glass Marcelo Murphy Nancy Tefft Nancy Katcher and Terrie Rutz.
The Greene Elementary School will hold a meeting on Wednesday March 9 at 7 30 p m to explain how Public Law 89 10 Title 1 is being utilized in the local school system Time will be allowed for visitation of the three mobile classrooms used in this project Parents of all school children are urged to attend and the public is invited
Funeral services for Arthur B. Shook, 85, of Route 2 Nora Springs were held midweek at Patterson James Chapel in Mason City. A former Greene resident, he died Sunday February 20 in a Mason City hospital. Born June 21, 1880 in Hillsboro Ohio, he was a carpenter and orchestra leader. Survivors include brother Charles Shook of Waterloo and sister Ada Lefonstee of Lansing Michigan. Burial followed in Nora Springs.

A public meeting to discuss Medicare health care benefits to seniors is set for today at 7 00 P M in the Butler County Farm Bureau Building Allison. Sponsored by Town Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans staff will explain how Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield will work together to provide benefits for those 65 and over. All interested persons or families are urged to attend. The program will cover gaps in Medicare coverage for eligible Iowans.
Mrs Alma Heckman has learned her son, Major James E. Heckman, is participating in resumed bombing over North Viet Nam. He commands a B-66 Destroyer guiding fighter groups with radar and dropping bombs on command. He has completed 18 missions and flies daily into the region.
Mrs. Anna Reed learned Sunday of the death of her daughter in law Mrs. Merlin Reed in Rockford Illinois after a cerebral hemorrhage. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in Rockford with relatives and friends listed including Mrs. George Christianson Mrs. Lowell Hobart Mr. and Mrs. Orville Reed Mrs. Dennis Wunsch and several Reed family members.
Seaman Apprentice Robert Kingery visits his parents Mr and Mrs Orval Kingery for two weeks after completing basic training in San Diego California. In two weeks he sails to Barber s Point Oahu Hawaii for further duty.
Doug Trees, a freshman, finished second in the 95 lb class at the Class A State Wrestling Tournament held in McElroy Auditorium Waterloo. He beat Ron Meaker of Tri-Center Neola in 1 57 in the first round, then defeated Sam Sloss of Johnston 5 4 in the semi finals before losing 0 2 to Steve Funk of Osage in the final. Trees ended the season with 26 wins and 2 losses.
The State Services for Crippled Children will hold a clinic at the National Guard Armory in Charles City on Friday March 25 providing diagnostic and evaluation services for crippled children under 21. Eligible counties include Butler Cerro Gordo Chickasaw Floyd Franklin Grundy Howard Worth Wright and Mitchell.
Maurice Barnett Jones sixty publisher of The Times Plain Dealer Cresco died in his sleep in Madison Wisconsin while seeking treatment for a heart condition. Interment was in What Cheer cemetery with Bradley Funeral home in charge Rev Robert Cleveland conducted the service. Jones born June thirty 1905 in Iowa City was husband of Ruth Baty and had a long career creating several Butler County newspapers before moving to Cresco to publish The Times Plain Dealer. He had arterial problems since 1950 and spent time at Mayo Clinic and St Marys Rochester before moving about for treatments and returning to Cresco prior to his death.
Sheriff Bonmaarden and Sheriff Peter Toomgarden of Alison apprehended Gordon Thoreson, an escapee from the Men’s Reformatory at Anamasa, near Bristow along a railroad. Thoreson, serving a local term for breaking and entering, fled Sunday in a five owned pickup and was spotted by Highway Patrol before being detained on Bristow tracks and held for return to Anamasa.
Agusta Kemming 84, died last Wednesday at Bartels Guthan Home in Waverly where she had resided for years. Survivors include eight daughters Erna Kemming Floyd Pov Huntington Park CA Herman Schug Hemet CA Edgar Tar Seattle WA Lloyd Bennett Tarkio MO Lily Chestnut Waverly Nick Kalianov Yuesa CA Wesles Flynn Corona CA and two sons Chris Waverly Victor Waterloo. Walter predeceased her. Funeral at St John s Lutheran Waverly Saturday 2 PM. Burial Harlington Cemetery.
The Butler County Board of Education voted 3 to 1 against the Waterloo area vocational-technical school after state approval. Black Hawk County officials urged limiting Black Hawk representation to four of nine seats. A follow up meeting within a week aims to revive the project, delaying the May election to June.
Directors from nine districts will be elected on April 19 1966 for the newly formed North Iowa Area Community College. Nomination papers with 50 signatures are due in Cerro Gordo County by the set filing window and will be published as required in each local district.
Mrs. Jane Knupp reports five new Living Memorials in Butler County Iowa between November 7, 1965 and February 7, 1966. Memorials honor Clarissa Ann Peck Karl Klinschmidt Remmer Harms Rosa Marie Folkerta and Alma Waidlich. Greene county chair Mrs Andrew Reid oversees county memorials.
Ramblers with Jerry Eimers posted three tourney wins last week to reach the district semifinals against Hampton at Charles City Thursday night at 7:30. Previous wins over CAL 66 46 and Riceville 63 46 set up the date, with the winner advancing to the district final and a shot at the District 14 title.
Robert Kingery, son of Mr and Mrs Orval Kingery Greene, completed seven weeks of basic training at the Naval Training Center in San Diego California. Under veteran Navy petty officers he learned naval history organization customs and courtesies ordinance and gunnery seamanship damage control first aid swimming survival shipboard drills sentry duty and more.
Jeffrey Lynn Dralle and Gregory Keith Dralle received the Pro Deo et Patria awards at St. Peter's Lutheran Church services. The honor recognizes second class or higher rank Scouts who complete religious projects and church service alongside scout requirements. Scoutmaster Henry Smeins and Explorer Advisor Leonard Nichol helped present the awards.
Butler County Board of Supervisors approve the 1966 Road Construction Program with $390,180 local funds and $260,000 Farm to Market funds. Planned work covers 22 miles resurfacing with 2147 Type B asphalt, 6 foot shoulders, two bridge replacements near Clarksville, and several new bridges and concrete slabs across multiple townships. Grading of 51 miles will use county forces amid a 1965 maintenance surfacing pause.
