New resident couple Mr. and Mrs. James Shoemaker welcomed a daughter Kristine Kay born Wednesday June 5 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital Charles City. She weighed 9 pounds 2 ounces and is greeted at home by brother Kevin age 2. Grandparents are C A White Red Oak and Margaret Shoemaker Ames.
Miss Myrna Landers of Greene, a 1968 Iowa Girls State delegate, was elected state representative in the fictional State of Hawkeye. Over 300 Iowa high school juniors attended the 23rd annual event at the University of Northern Iowa campus, sponsored by the Iowa American Legion Auxiliary, with two parties campaigning for city county and state offices. The program teaches representative government procedures and civic leadership.

Russell J. Perry reports April savings bond sales in Butler County total $43,195, with four month sales at $171,816 or 21 percent of the 1968 quota. Scott County leads Iowa with 56 percent, Van Buren 55 percent. Iowa April sales reach $7,842,827 and four month total $34,060,881 for 31 percent of the goal. Perry cites higher rates on Freedom Shares and Series E bonds to boost purchases at local banks.
The Greene Woman's Club sponsors a six week summer program starting June 17 for children in grades 4 5 and 6 with bowling archery and golf among the activities. Weekly sessions run June 19 in bowling and archery with golf starting June 17. Perrin Park hosts crafts softball boat safety pet parade bicycle safety and singing for younger children. A Friday meeting at Perrin Park June 14 seeks at least ten enrollees per activity.
Paul Tobiason was ordained at a Wayne Zion Lutheran Church service near Monticello on Sunday evening. Attendees included Mrs. Fred Wirth and Betty of Greene and Melvin Wirth of Austin, Minnesota. Rev. Tobiason is married to Jeanette Wirth of Greene. Also taking part were Ernest Mancini, Rev. Luther Wachholtz, Rev. Orville Olson, Rev. Robert Niederwimmer, Rev. Otto Zwanziger, and a pastor representing Rev. Bruno Schlachtenhausen, with Melvin Wirth as organist.
Paul Beguelin, 80, died at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City after a brief illness. Born August 10, 1887 in Highland, Illinois, he was the son of Paul Beguelin Sr. Funeral services are set for Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene with Rev. George Knutsen officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Butler County girls in seventh and eighth grade are invited to a two day babysitting workshop led by extension-home economist Roberta Wiegmann. Sessions run June 18–19 from 1:30 to 3:00 PM at the Extension office in Allison with advanced registration by June 14 and no fee. The program covers sitter duties, parent expectations, and safety, featuring a panel and a film titled To A Baby Sitter.
Norman Graven of Greene Republican attorney becomes Butler County Chairman for Don Johnson for Governor. Graven, partner in Graven & Graven, attended Cornell Wartburg and Iowa. He led local Young Republicans and serves in JCs and Boy Scouts as Johnson expands statewide.
Nellie Curtis 96 of Greene died at Mathers Rest Home after a week as patient. Born Nellie Mae Woodling November 15 1871 she married William Morse Curtis March 31 1896 in Greene. Survivors include four sons Dell Claire Gene Robert all Greene. three daughters Gail Pistole Dorothy Rodney and Margaret Angarola. 20 grandchildren 49 great grandchildren two sisters Elma Woodling and Carol Ferris. Husband and two children Leo and Leeta preceded her in death June 13 at 2 PM United Methodist Church with Rev Wayne Gjerde officiating. Burial Rose Hill Cemetery. Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge.
The Country Club posts a schedule of events including an adult steak fry for members and guests on Saturday evening June 15 at 9:00 PM with self-brought steaks. A youth tournament is set for Monday June 17 starting at 1:00 PM. A family picnic is planned for Thursday June 20. Open House and dinner dance occur on Wednesday July 3.
Mrs Melvin Majewski won $100 playing Banko at Dralle's Department Store. The event highlights a lucky draw during the store's promotion, drawing customer participation and prize payout.
John Van Eschen, a Butler County attorney and Greene native, announced his candidacy as the Democratic nominee for the Third District seat in the U S House. He is 39, married with two sons, Navy veteran, and serves a third term as Greene Community School Board president. He graduated from University of Iowa Law School and is a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Elks, and American Legion post 268.
Red Cross lifesaving lessons start Thursday June 13 at 8 30 a.m. at the Greene Community Swimming Pool. Junior class ages 12 to 15 or 7th to 10th graders. seniors 16 and up or 11th grade may enroll. Transportation is the student’s responsibility. contact Margaret Senne at 823-4245 for details.
The Butler County Republican Women sponsor a Fun Day rain or shine at the Club House Beaver Meadows Park north of Parkersburg on June 19. Schedule runs 9:00 to 4:00 with golf, bridge, lunch with style show, a brief business meeting, introductions of Republican candidates, and various games. Registration is 75 cents covering lunch and coffee. attendees can come for the full day or just the lunch event.
Dick Witwer underwent extensive surgery on Saturday at the University Hospital in Iowa City. He is reported in stable condition and his family thanks medical staff for their care.

The Little League and Babe Ruth teams won two games last week. The Little League opened with a 4 to 1 win over Rudd, Greene driving in two first inning runs. Jim McLennan led Greene with a triple and single, Dave Eimers pitched the victory. Thursday, Little Leaguers beat Nora Springs 6 to 5 as Nora Springs rallied for five runs in the final inning. Jimmy Van Eschen debuted with four shutout innings, allowing two hits and three strikeouts. Russell McGee homered, Van Eschen added a triple, and Mike Adams doubled. The Babe Ruth game vs Rudd started as a pitcher’s duel, but Greene benefited from two Rudd errors and four walks to take a 2–0 lead, with Bruce Litterer scoring on an infield hit and Dan Keimers adding a single. Mrs. Herman Stubbe fractured two ankle bones and a foot gash after a ladder fall while washing windows. At Floyd County Memorial Hospital she remains hospitalized. Jacquelin Roose, 18, of Allison, is Butler County’s 1968 Dairy Princess, selected from fourteen candidates during Clarksville’s Dairy Day. She will compete in the state Dairy Princess contest. Roose, daughter of Don and (surname) Roose, graduates Clarksville High and plans to attend Coe College in Cedar Rapids. Runner-up is Dianne Stauffer of Greene. Crowned by 1967 princess Bonnie Jans, Dairy Day drew about 3,000 people and featured parades, floats, decorated bikes, horses, and multiple events including a dairy smorgasbord and crownings. Dairy Day was co sponsored by the Clarksville Commercial Club and Butler County Dairy Promotion Committee. Float contest winners included Kiddie group Melbert Johnson, Jane Becker, Teresa Sherburne. 4-H division Butler Bonnie Belles. Fremont Rainbow Gals and Fremont Ramblers. Girl Scouts. Rebecca and IOOF float.
Mrs L C Whitehead is a patient at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City where she is receiving treatment.
Ann Allison daughter of Mr and Mrs Harold Allison represented Greene Community High School at the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City on Tuesday. She was chosen as Greene's band queen by members of the High School Concert Band after graduating this spring. She was active in concert and marching bands and the mixed chorus during high school.
John Vernon Gersema left Monday to return to Vietnam after a 30 day furlough spent in the home of his parents Mr and Mrs John Gersema.
Butler County 4-H youths travel to the central Iowa 4-H Camp near Madrid June 12 to 15 as part of a tri county group with Bremer and Chickasaw. Delegates from Butler to the State Leadership Conference are Charlotte Mennen and David Hauser. The Iowa 4-H Foundation owns the camp, operated by Iowa State University, with a capacity of up to five groups this summer and total campers between 4000 and 5000.
Rambler baseball team split games last week losing 3 to 2 to Rockford on Tuesday. They then defeated Nashua 16 to 2 on Wednesday. Greene led Greene scoring across multiple innings, with several players each recording hits. Upcoming games include St Ansgar, Nora Springs, and a trip to Manly.
Mark P. Frudden aged 40, son of Clyde M. Frudden of Greene Iowa, and husband of Judy Coolidge of Washington BD, C., has returned to the United States aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Lawrence after over four months in the Mediterranean Sea. His ship took part in exercises with the U S Sixth Fleet and NATO forces.
