The Editor notes that Butler County baseball appears strong with a red-hot race for top spots as Greene loses to Allison 3-2 in a preview of improved league play. Plans for Perrin's Park tennis and skating facilities progress, with support urged to complete the project.
State University of Iowa spring commencement will confer degrees on about 1,100 students Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the University Fieldhouse. W Howard Chase of New York will give the address on The Brink of Peace. Virgil M Hancher will deliver the charge. Donald Bartels of Greene will receive a Bachelor of Science in Commerce.
George W. Berger 63 of 432 Campbell Ave Waterloo died Wednesday in the office of Dr. Shulman from a heart attack. Born March 25 1894 in Greene he was a WWI veteran who served as cashier of Waterloo Bank and Trust Co before joining the Iowa State Banking Dept in 1925. He later opened a tax accounting service in Marsh Place Building. Funeral services were held Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Vacation Bible school started last Monday June 3 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church and will run two weeks from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. Freda Maass leads as superintendent with a full staff of senior, junior, primary, and beginner teachers and helpers. Attendance has been about 100 per day.
Open house was held at the Clark Rest Home on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Mr and Mrs Wilson Clark bought the business from Mr and Mrs 8. M. Dolan last October and leased the building from T. S. Albrecht. The home welcomes visitors of all faiths and refreshments were served to guests.
Principal Donald Bachman announces final six weeks and second semester honor rolls. The list includes six weeks seniors Arthena Bobst Vickie Burroughs and others. juniors like Verlene Barth Karen Curtis. sophomores Robin Boller Virginia Bruns. freshmen Jerry Backer Sally Bartels. seventh and eighth graders such as Roger Wells Shirley Starkweather. multiple students named across grades with extensive roll listings.
Methodist ministers and their families from 11-county Waterloo District will gather for a picnic June 9 at Wildwood Park in Charles City. Rev and Mrs Clayton Becker will attend Greene. A dinner is planned at 1 p m followed by recreation. about 45 ministers span Black Hawk Bremer Buchanan Butler Cerro Gordo Chickasaw Floyd Franklin Howard Mitchell Worth.
City Planning Board urges residents and clubs to join a beautification program by planting flowers trees and shrubs. Projects include plantings by the Ladies Embroidery Club at Interstate Power Company corner and by the Handicraft Club near the bridge and the American Legion Auxiliary near Next corner. If approved, next year cooperation will expand to New Hampton Independence Decorah and Osceola to boost northeast Iowa as a Petunia center.
The Presbyterian Bible School began Monday in the First Presbyterian Church and runs daily 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. through June 14 with about fifty pupils from kindergarten to sixth grade. Directors are Mrs. Howard Raisty and Mrs. Dale McRoberts. Children’s Day is Sunday, June 9 at 9:00 a.m. Dr. Frielie Conaway will speak at Sunday school and church. The school closes June 14 with a 5:00 p.m. picnic at Perrin Park for the entire Sunday School group.
Thirty six farmers with thirty four tractors gathered at Edwin Brunner farm east of Greene to plow and plant sixty five acres of corn and beans. Twenty five acres were plowed for sweet corn the following morning while twelve neighbor women served a picnic. Brunner, a Cedar Valley hospital patient, underwent major surgery last Friday morning.
The Greene Public Library is again sponsoring the summer reading program with the theme Book Parade. Each child will receive a card to record books read, and parents are urged to encourage reading as a source of information, comfort, and pleasure.
Annette Green daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Green who won the District Championship at Mason City on May 18 advanced to the state finals in Waterloo last Saturday. She had a bye in round one then beat Linda Lichty West Waterloo high before losing to Phyllis Frank Grinnell in the semifinals.
The annual Methodist Church picnic will be held on Sunday June 16 at noon in Perrin Park Greene.
Allison erased a 2-0 deficit with two in the 8th and a 9th inning run to beat Greene 3-2 on the local diamond. Mair took the loss with eight hits allowed, while DeGrote earned the win after relieving White in the sixth. Greene visits Dumont next Sunday at 2 15 p.m.
Four Butler county Farm Bureau representatives attended the annual Iowa Farm Bureau Mid- Summer conference in Des Moines on June 8 and 4, led by President Edwin Scheer. Attending were Vice-president G. B. Eckles Voting delegate Harry Ott and William Moulton, the county Field man. Also present were four Farm Bureau insurance staff members and a sales campaign kickoff group. Notable speakers included Earl Hall editor of the Mason City Globe Gazette Bert Zuver Des Moines City assessor Earl St. Clair Kentucky Farm Bureau president and Clayton Band Mississippi lecturer and columnist.
Jerry Eimers, coach for the Pee Wee and Midget Little League squads, released the summer schedule. Pee Wees under 13 as of June 1 and Midgets under 16 as of June 1 plus a high school sophomore limit. Practices set for June 11 12 13 from 1:00 to 2:30 for Pee Wees and 2:30 to 4:00 for Midgets.
Mrs. Claire Kepple leads the North Iowa Ceramic Club on a chartered bus trip to Chicago for the annual Great Lakes Ceramic Exhibition at the Conrad Hilton Hotel. The group traveled from Sunday to Wednesday for the event and related activities.
Governor Herschel Loveless will be the featured speaker at the Butler County Dairy Promotion Banquet on Thursday June 6. Earl Wright of Iowa State College will discuss Iowa's Stake in the Dairy Industry. The event kicks off June Dairy Month with local creameries and processors providing the menu and Butler County’s dairy princess to be crowned.
Daily Vacation Bible School starts Monday June 17 at the Church of Christ in Greene and runs through Friday June 28 for children ages 5 to 14. Theme is Jesus Calls. Misses Ella Dennis and Marcia Lanham of Minnesota Bible College assist director Mrs. C. D. Alexander. Registration party June 14 at 2:30 on the church lawn. School meets 9:30 to 11:30 am Monday through Friday. A picnic and evening program close the session.
Alonzo S. Woodward age 81 died May 2 in an Orlando Florida hospital. He was born in Belmidere Illinois son of John and Celia Woodward. He married Lillia Yeoman in 1897. two sons were born to that union. Surviving: son Doyle Woodward of Orlando Florida a grandson Patrick Woodward Isabel Kansas five other grandchildren five great grandchildren three sisters and two brothers. Graveside rites were held at Rose Hill Cemetery Greene at 9:30 am with Rev. G F Butler Presbyterian Church officiating.
Wilbur C. Wiegman born June 12 1917 in Coldwater Township died in a two car crash near Wilmar station last Monday evening. His wife and three sons were hospitalized at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City while the oldest son David 9 was released to recover at his grandparents home in Allison. Funeral services were at St John Lutheran Church Wilmar with Rev Robert Floy officiating and burial in Allison Cemetery. A fund drive for the family is under way with donations at First State Bank Greene or with Paul Dralle Greene.
The American Cancer Society Crusade for Funds closed in Butler County with strong results. County Campaign Fund Chairmen Mrs. Horace G Daggett announced a grand total of $4,728.43 raised, with most funds slated for cancer research and early-diagnosis education. Township chairmen Bennedette Stubbe, Harry Ott, August Becker, and Lowell Maxson led local efforts, while D A Harken of Aplington and Wm Brandenburg of Dumont were recognized for long-time service and leadership.
Carl Taylor, long time patient at the University Hospital in Iowa City, after months of treatment and two major surgeries, spent the final days of last week at Clark Rest Home and returned to Iowa City for further care.
The Boy Scouts Explorer Post 26 will inspect bicycles on Monday nights June 10 and 24 at the school. They will assess needed repairs and enhance safety with Scotch Lite tape and a free city license tag. Owners are urged to attend to receive tape licensing and riding safety recommendations.
Promotion Day exercises were held at Greene Community School last Wednesday morning. High School students received diplomas and honor certificates in the high school assembly room. Scholastic and merit awards honored seniors Joyce Fiddick Karen Johnson Verlene Barth and others with top rankings across grades.
James F. Kohout, 83, of Chicago Illinois, uncle of Mrs Mildred Ruzicka of Greene, died at St Joseph Mercy hospital Mason City after emergency surgery May 29. He was manager of Hines Lumber Co Cicero Illinois and a Knight of Columbus of the Cardinal's Council. Rites were held Monday at St Francis Xavier Church La Grange Illinois with burial in Mary Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
Mr and Mrs Wayne Marty and their son left last evening for La Verne to visit his parents before moving to Iowa City. Marty will pursue a Master’s Degree in Zoology at the University of Iowa. He has been a mathematics teacher at Greene High School for the past two years.
A stag supper will be held at the Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Tuesday evening June 11. Verle Barth and Richard Wagoner chair the committee with helpers W. J. Tatum Clarence Barnett Donald Backman Calvin Kelly Glenn Teuex and Max Bellows. Tickets may be purchased from any committee member.
Butler County Treasurer Harvey DeBower urged voters to approve up to 330000 in bonds to build a new courthouse with fireproof storage. He warned current offices lack space since 1881 and new duties have strained operations, proposing a 7 to 8 of a mill levy for 26 years to cover costs.
The 21st annual convention of the Iowa District Brotherhood of the American Lutheran Church met at First Lutheran Church Britt on June 1 and 2 with 254 delegates and visitors. Delegates included John Dobel and Dale Hildebrand from St. Peter's Lutheran. Herman Pietz Dakota District president and South Dakota legislator gave the banquet address on the theme Forward Men in a Growing Church. H W Sietkes Iowa District president delivered the convention sermon. Bern ard Buhr Sumner and Robert Erieman Fort Dodge were re-elected vice president and secretary.
