Rites Held for George Berger

George W. Berger 63 of 432 Campbell Ave Waterloo died Wednesday in the office of Dr. Shulman from a heart attack. Born March 25 1894 in Greene he was a WWI veteran who served as cashier of Waterloo Bank and Trust Co before joining the Iowa State Banking Dept in 1925. He later opened a tax accounting service in Marsh Place Building. Funeral services were held Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Bible School Began At Lutheran Church

Vacation Bible school started last Monday June 3 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church and will run two weeks from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. Freda Maass leads as superintendent with a full staff of senior, junior, primary, and beginner teachers and helpers. Attendance has been about 100 per day.

Open House At Clark Rest Home In Weekend Event

Open house was held at the Clark Rest Home on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Mr and Mrs Wilson Clark bought the business from Mr and Mrs 8. M. Dolan last October and leased the building from T. S. Albrecht. The home welcomes visitors of all faiths and refreshments were served to guests.

Residents Urged To Beautify Greene Green Area

City Planning Board urges residents and clubs to join a beautification program by planting flowers trees and shrubs. Projects include plantings by the Ladies Embroidery Club at Interstate Power Company corner and by the Handicraft Club near the bridge and the American Legion Auxiliary near Next corner. If approved, next year cooperation will expand to New Hampton Independence Decorah and Osceola to boost northeast Iowa as a Petunia center.

Presbyterian Bible School Opens at First Church in June

The Presbyterian Bible School began Monday in the First Presbyterian Church and runs daily 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. through June 14 with about fifty pupils from kindergarten to sixth grade. Directors are Mrs. Howard Raisty and Mrs. Dale McRoberts. Children’s Day is Sunday, June 9 at 9:00 a.m. Dr. Frielie Conaway will speak at Sunday school and church. The school closes June 14 with a 5:00 p.m. picnic at Perrin Park for the entire Sunday School group.

Good Neighbor Deed At Edwin Brunner Farm

Thirty six farmers with thirty four tractors gathered at Edwin Brunner farm east of Greene to plow and plant sixty five acres of corn and beans. Twenty five acres were plowed for sweet corn the following morning while twelve neighbor women served a picnic. Brunner, a Cedar Valley hospital patient, underwent major surgery last Friday morning.

The Greene Public Library is again sponsoring the summer reading program with the theme Book Parade. Each child will receive a card to record books read, and parents are urged to encourage reading as a source of information, comfort, and pleasure.

Annette Green Reaches State Tennis Semifinals

Annette Green daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Green who won the District Championship at Mason City on May 18 advanced to the state finals in Waterloo last Saturday. She had a bye in round one then beat Linda Lichty West Waterloo high before losing to Phyllis Frank Grinnell in the semifinals.

Pee Wee And Midget Schedule Announced

Graveside Service Held This Morning For Alonzo Woodward

Alonzo S. Woodward age 81 died May 2 in an Orlando Florida hospital. He was born in Belmidere Illinois son of John and Celia Woodward. He married Lillia Yeoman in 1897. two sons were born to that union. Surviving: son Doyle Woodward of Orlando Florida a grandson Patrick Woodward Isabel Kansas five other grandchildren five great grandchildren three sisters and two brothers. Rites Held for Wilbur Wiegman

Wilbur C. Wiegman born June 12 1917 in Coldwater Township died in a two car crash near Wilmar station last Monday evening. His wife and three sons were hospitalized at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City while the oldest son David 9 was released to recover at his grandparents home in Allison. Funeral services were at St John Lutheran Church Wilmar with Rev Robert Floy officiating and burial in Allison Cemetery. A fund drive for the family is under way with donations at First State Bank Greene or with Paul Dralle Greene.

James F. Kohout Rites Held Monday

James F. Kohout, 83, of Chicago Illinois, uncle of Mrs Mildred Ruzicka of Greene, died at St Joseph Mercy hospital Mason City after emergency surgery May 29. He was manager of Hines Lumber Co Cicero Illinois and a Knight of Columbus of the Cardinal's Council. Rites were held Monday at St Francis Xavier Church La Grange Illinois with burial in Mary Queen of Heaven Cemetery.

Butler Treasurer Seeks Bonds for New Courthouse

Butler County Treasurer Harvey DeBower urged voters to approve up to 330000 in bonds to build a new courthouse with fireproof storage. He warned current offices lack space since 1881 and new duties have strained operations, proposing a 7 to 8 of a mill levy for 26 years to cover costs.

Lutheran Brotherhood Convention Held in Britt Iowa

The 21st annual convention of the Iowa District Brotherhood of the American Lutheran Church met at First Lutheran Church Britt on June 1 and 2 with 254 delegates and visitors. Delegates included John Dobel and Dale Hildebrand from St. Peter's Lutheran. Herman Pietz Dakota District president and South Dakota legislator gave the banquet address on the theme Forward Men in a Growing Church.
