The editor praises Roy Pooley for an exemplary yard flower garden and urges more weed cutting and planting. The re formed Glenn Miller Orchestra of 18 pieces under Ray McKinley will appear at the Surf Ballroom on Thursday June 26. The group revives the big band tradition and continues the Miller legacy after the leader’s World War II death.
Marilyn Dralle of Greene was crowned Butler County Dairy Princess by Governor Loveless at the Dairy Promotion Banquet on June 6. Other candidates were Dixie Brown of Clarksville and Marlys Alfers of Parkersburg. Dralle will compete for the State Dairy Princess Contest at Cedar Rapids in August.

The 102nd North Iowa Conference session opens June 16 at First Methodist Church Waterloo with Bishop Ensley presiding. About 700 attend, including 350 ministers and 450 churches across 52 counties, to set pastoral appointments and boost higher education support for Cornell, Morningside, and Wesley Foundation programs. Youth Day on June 19 features high school youths joining delegates.

Charles Teeple and Gene Nettleton, with Glade Heichel, were injured in a two car crash north of Greene at 1 30 a m last Friday. Teeple was critically injured, Nettleton and Heichel lightly hurt. All three wore safety belts and were taken to Cedar Valley Hospital. Teeple later to Rochester for emergency surgery. Nettleton released Sunday. Heichel discharged the same day.
Mrs Cecil Poppe and her children David Teresa and Becky Sue of Santa Fe New Mexico are visiting in Gust Johnsons home Mr Poppe is Executive Administrator of St Vincent s hospital in Santa Fe Mrs Johnson and Roger returned home with them today Wednesday for a visit.
The first family picnic at Round Grove Golf and Country Club will be held on Thursday June 13 at 6 30 p m. Chairs are Mr and Mrs Russell Meyers and Mr and Mrs M K Sperry.
Governor Herschel Loveless attends an open house at the A. B. Mahnke residence in Greene with Mrs Loveless and about eighteen junior Democrats. Guests include Joanne Majewski Donna Hardy Clare Grendler Tom Nixt and others while out of town visitors arrive from Des Moines Cedar Falls and Clarksville among places listed. An evening reception precedes a Dairy Promotion banquet in Allison where Loveless was guest speaker.
The Midget and Pee Wee baseball squads begin play in the Butler County League at Allison on Monday June 17. Practice times are Pee Wees 8:30 to 4:00 and Midgets 10:00 to 11:30. Coach Jerry Eumers plans a four team Pee Wee league for ages 8 to 12 with 60 players expected, 15 per team, games on Tuesdays after supper starting June 25.
The Woman's Club Flower Show will be held on August 13 at the Greene High School Gymnasium. Classifications will be printed at a later date. The event carries the theme Town ’n Country.
Allusions to a proposed reorganization of Greene Community Schools follow Iowa Supreme Court guidance. Butler and Floyd County boards must approve before petitions circulate for a hearing and election. The plan includes Coldwater township, totaling about 115 square miles with ~7 million in taxable value and over 11 million in real value. The Supreme Court directs Greene District to operate until July 1 1958 and include seven original areas next year. If voters approve again, Coldwater will join July 1 1957. Harry Starfen son of Mr and Mrs L A Starin of Greene was elected president of the Newman Club at Town State Teachers College in Cedar Falls for the 1937-58 school year. The club, linked to a national Catholic student group, promotes religious educational and social activities. Harry will be a senior majoring in Industrial Arts.
The Perrin Park playground begins a six week summer program Monday June 17 at 1 30 pm sponsored by the Woman's Club. It offers Red Cross swimming lessons softball crafts dancing and games with Barbara Knapp directing and Mr Eimers coordinating major sports Roger Spratt assisting. The Greene Public Library sponsors a summer reading program with the theme Book Parade inviting participation and parental permission notes are required for play day entries.
Plans call for a combined tennis court and ice skating rink in Perrin Park's southeast corner this summer. The Federated Women's Club of Greene will solicit donors and volunteers from Greene and nearby areas, with support from Tao Town Council and park board members. Budget relies on donations and volunteer labor. any remaining balance borrows from 1957 recreation funds. The facility will serve summer uses like tennis, badminton, basketball, volleyball and shuffleboard, and be flooded for winter skating with flood lights for public access.
Butler County voters rejected a proposal to erect a new court house by 951 to 935 in last Monday’s election. Four townships backed the plan, with West Point Allison 281 to 69, Washington 29 to 18, Albion 111 to 61, Bennedette 32 to 31 in favor. Coldwater voted 120 to 72 against, reflecting tax resistance and indifference to the current building. The supervisors must now remodel the present facility with limited funds.
St. Peter's Lutheran in Greene celebrated Rev. I. J. Deines 25 years in ministry with an 8:00 p.m. service on Sunday June 10 and a reception. Pastors from Charles City Allison Wilmar Rockford and others attended. Deines ordination was June 16 1932 and his work included Tama Marble Rock and Greene. The Greene congregation presented him a substantial monetary gift.
The first Youth Night of the year will be held at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Friday evening June 14. All local youths are invited. Committee members include Verlene Barth, Charles Davis, Joe Allison, Judy Willey, Carol Devies and Jim Maxwell. Sponsors are Mr. and Mrs. Francis Knapp and Mr. and Mrs. James Mead.
Mrs Jean Truitt born September 1918 in Greene died in California on Monday June 3. She married wn Truitt and had three children Johnnie Timmy and Martha. Survived by husband three children two sisters and four brothers. She graduated Greene High School 1935 Coe College Cedar Rapids and attended Town State College Ames. Burial in Kansas City Missouri. Funeral services were held at Newcomer Funeral Home Kansas City on Saturday June 8.
The Greene High School Concert Band will present its first summer concert this Saturday June 13 at 7 30 p m weather permitting on Main Street Actvilies. Concerts will run each Saturday evening through August 3 with a 65 piece ensemble also chosen to perform at the North Iowa Fair in Maser City on August 10.
The Greene Community School district Board of Education accepted William Johnson resig nation due to ill health. August Backer of Dayton township was appointed to fill the vacancy.
