The column previews Wednesday sectional tournament action and notes on local teams. Allison Cats host New Hampton tonight, Greene’s Little League scenes and toads appear in increasing numbers, while the old timers game remains planned and more details will be in the Recorder.
Mrs Dean Edwards, released Thursday from General Hospital in Hampton after surgery, is back at home. She is resting and in good spirits as she recuperates.
The General Association of Regular Baptist Churches held its 33rd annual conference June 21 to 26 at the Bible Conference Grounds Winona Lake Indiana with theme Faith For Our Times. More than 2000 messengers registered and 6500 attended Tuesday night at Bily Tabernacle. Sixty eight new churches joined the association this year totaling 1156 churches. The group supports 1200 missionaries through six colleges and seminaries and five mission agencies. Rev George Knuts on pastor of Calvary Baptist Greene attended with his wife.
A family picnic will be held at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Thursday July 16. Chairmen are Dr and Mrs B V Andersen and Mr and Mrs Roy Pooley. Notify them of any changes on the committee. WSFA prrfRCHE.
The Butler County Republican Convention at Allison Court House on Friday June 26 elected delegates to the State Republican convention on July 29 at Des Moines Veteran's Memorial Auditorium. Delegates include L. D. A business meeting elected new officers for two years: Herman Faber Parkerburgs chairman Pearl Fisher Allison vice chairman John Stout Parkersburg finance chairman Ralph Marsh Greene organizational chairman. The committee plans to organize each precinct to get out the vote at the General Election.
There will be no window service or rural carrier on Saturday July 4 at the Greene Post Office. Mail will be dispatched and distributed as on any other holiday.
Glade Meicnel and Wayne Thomason were placed in Mississippi River boat races at Dubuque on Sunday. Glade earned first and second in the A runabout and first and second in the B runabout. Thomason finished second and fourth in the B runabout. Glade will race at Clinton next Saturday and both men and son Terry will compete at Charles City on Sunday.
The Greene Commercial Club and Round Grove Golf and Country Club sponsor a July 4 fireworks display at the Country Club river bank starting around 3 PM with ample parking at both venues. Children’s races begin at 9 AM at Greene Athletic Field with age groups and prizes including a $5 patriotic decorated bicycle prize for riders through 14.
Dan Schroeder an 11 year old son of Mr and Mrs Jim Schroeder lost the end of his ring finger on his left hand in a Friday evening lawn mower accident. The finger was severed at the first joint.
The Junior Legion squad, after a 6-0 start, beat Charles City 13 to 2 on last Thursday’s home diamond with 12 hits and four Charles City errors. Barth, Reiners, Gabe and Allison each had two hits as Greene built a big early lead and held on for the win.
Mrs. A. F. Lindell was discharged from Park Hospital in Mason City after a surgical stay and returned home on Monday.
Marvin Moser placed third in the consolation heat while Jim Marshall finished fifth in the feature at the Nashua stock car traces on Saturday evening.
Mr and Mrs Harry Brinkman returned home from McCleary Thornton Minor Hospital in Excelsior Springs Missouri after four weeks of surgery and treatment.
New books highlighted include John F Kennedy President by Hugh Sidey and Apostle for Our Time by John G Clancy. Sidey draws on his access and chronicles Kennedy years from convention to Dallas amid calm and crisis. Clancy profiles Cardinal Montini later Pope Paul VI focusing on labor interests and interfaith relations.
Activities at Round Grove Golf and Country Club this week end include a Friday night dance on July 3 with Galen Martzuhn Harry Ott Andrew Reid Don McGee and M McKinley as committee. A 12 noon potluck dinner on July 4 features Clarence Barnett Wilbur Tindall Del Curti and J T Truitt on the coffee committee. The mixed 2 ball golf tournament starts at 1 30 p.m.
New residents Mr. and Mrs. Max Weyand welcomed a daughter born Friday June 26 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City. The infant weighs eight pounds four ounces and is named Jean Louise.
Mr and Mrs Jim McLennan and son Jim will appear on Dr Mac's show on WMT TV Cedar Rapids Monday afternoon to discuss their Scotland trip and show films. They depart Cedar Rapids by United Air for Chicago then New York City, fly to Glasgow arriving July 13 at 7 45 a m, then travel by motor caravan to Edinburgh.
Herman Wolf 73, owner and manager of the River View Motel near Charles City, died of a heart attack at Cedar Valley Hospital. Born February 3, 1891 in Waverly, he married Minnie Quilling in 1915 and lived in Greene before moving to Charles City in 1948. Survived by wife Minnie, three sons Paul, Willard, Raymond, a daughter, 13 grandchildren, five sisters and a sister in Reading. Funeral Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, Charles City, with burial at Sunnyside Memory Gardens.
Visiting Here Private First Class Dallas Foster and Mrs. Foster and Cindy Sue are spending a 30 day furlough in the home of their parents Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Foster and Mrs. Rex Townsley. He is stationed at Eglin Air Force Base near Pensacola Florida.
Week end visit by Tessie Borromeo Adelaida Tu cio and Adelaida Dillareal nurses at St Marys Hospital Rochester Minnesota spent the week end in the home of Mr and Mrs Ivan Clikeman and family
The Iowa High School Athletic Association announced sectional pairings and sites for summer baseball. North Iowa teams will play in Greene Algona Kanawha and Mason City with games set July 8 to 13 leading to district and substate rounds.
Butler County sales of United States savings bonds in May totaled 43 181, raising the five month county total to 420 186 or 47 percent of the 1964 quota. County chairman John McWhirter of Allison says Operation Security ends July 4 and urges locals to buy an extra bond. Statewide Iowa May sales reached 8 138 726, with five month total 54 171 226 or 48 percent of the goal.
Ramblers beat Rockford 17 to 4 as Larry Uhlenhopp and Jeff Dralle starred at the plate with two hits each and Greene's pitching shone. In the Little League contest Gary Johnson yielded no hits in three innings while Dick Stuntz wrapped the 4 inning win with two extra base hit support. The Babe Ruth team routed Rudd 10 to 0 as Johnson drove in three and Kock tripled, extending Greene’s seven game league streak and setting up a clash with Nashua followed by Marble Rock trip away.
Butler County Mutual agents were honored as production leaders at Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company annual meeting in Grinnell. A certificate of recognition was presented for the number of direct line policies in force, ranking third in Iowa. Date Brinkman accepted the award on behalf of the agency.
Members of the Butler County summer school English class attended the play St Joan at the Tyrone Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis on Wednesday afternoon June 24. In class work the production was used to analyze drama and evaluate staging. Instructors Bir Dale Becker and Mr Hultman accompanied the group along with Butler County Board member Burton Sproie and administrative assistants Audrey Stemmerman and Elea Stupman from the Bremer and Butler county superintendents’ offices.
Butler County's Agricultural Conservation Program shows 1012 farms engaged in ACP practices in 1963, with about 20291 acres treated. Nationally, over a million farms participated. Iowa had 67870. The 1963 investment totaled about 155826 dollars, with cost-sharing roughly half. In 1964, 330 Butler County farmers sought ACP cost-sharing for soil water woodland and wildlife work.
Rev. and Mrs. James Parks and family of Springheld Missouri visited Greene friends on Monday. A reception in their honor was held at the Church of the Brethren Monday evening. The Parks came from Lincoln Nebraska where they attended the annual conference of the Church of the Brethren.
