Bruce Burroughs travels with a 40 member Winnebago and Prairie Gold Council group to the Sixth National Boy Scout Jamboree at Valley Forge Pennsylvania July 17 to 23. En route they visit Dearborn Niagara Falls West Point the Worlds Fair and New York Washington DC and Arlington. Afterward the group tours Philadelphia Atlantic City O'Hare Brookfield Zoo and Chicago museums returning July 27.
Walter D. Kemming 56 local businessman died in Mercy Hospital Waverly following a heart attack. He was born January 5 1908 in Charter Oak Iowa and married Lois Garvey May 30 1936. He operated Sinclair stations in Greene most of his career and served on church council fire department and town council. Survived by wife son Craig mother two brothers and eight sisters. Funeral held at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Greene area Boy Scouts join about 10 000 expected attendees at Mason City Municipal Airport for the American Heritage Campfire. Event runs 5 pm to 8 40 pm with family picnics, barbecue, color guard, Blue Angels introduction, skit by Troop 60 of Charles City, flag speech by Ray E Clough, God Bless America led by John Mead, and Taps by Rex Phillips.
Dr. Sam Legvold of Towa State University Physics Department spoke to the county summer math class on July 1 about Magnetic Phenomena in Rare Earth Metals. He demonstrated experiments using liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen to show how coldness affects magnetism in these metals.
Corpus Christi visitor Miss Persis Pooley arrived Saturday night and stayed with Mrs. Bert Pooley and Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Rottler and family. She spent a week in St. Louis for the American Library Association convention.
The Allison Cats beat Denver 8 to 0 at Allison on Sunday afternoon for their 11th straight win. Ken Sutton of Greene delivered the big blow with a sixth inning two run homer. Folkerts started and pitched seven innings, with Prange finishing the last two.
The annual mixed two-ball foursome at Round Grove Golf and Country Club saw three teams tied for first: Sam Sneed with Erma Bartels, Jim Drakle with Phyllis Curtis, and Oscar Bartels with Fem Stuntz. Oscar Bartels and Fern Stuntz won in sudden death while Clyde Stuntz and Darlene Ray claimed the flag hole prize and Graydon Anderson with Beverly Heidenwirth took the high score prize.
Attendees at the funeral of 11 year old Phillip Shook included Mr and Mrs Galen Smith Darlyl and Janan Mr and Mrs John McRoberts and Ira Mc Roberts. Phillip is one of 11 year old twin sons of Paul Shook Jr and his wife missionaries to Japan. The family has been on furlough since last fall.
The summer high school baseball sectional begins this evening with Waverly facing CAL at 6:30 pm followed by Sumner against Allison at 8:00. Thursday features Rockford versus Fredericksburg and Denver versus Parkersburg. Saturday matches Hampton against CAL-Waverly winner and Greene versus Sumner-Allison winner. Semis are at 6:30 and 8:00 Monday, with the finals at 8:00 next Wednesday.
Jim Marshall of Greene placed sixth in the consolation heat of Nashua stock car races on Saturday evening. Russell Folkerts of Marble Rock took a second in the second heat a third in the A Semi main and seventh in the feature. Marshall flipped his car in the third heat landing on its side but unhurt he ran to another car and finished the race.
A teen dance will be held at the Country Club on Friday night July 10 from dusk to midnight. KWWL disc jockey will be present for entertainment.
Mrs Ira Marsh 78 died Monday evening July 6 at North Shore Manor nursing home Loveland Colorado after a lingering illness. Survivors include three daughters Lillian Marsh Mani towoc Wisconsin Mrs George Harriett Alfers Loveland Colorado and Mrs Gordon Marian Wood Greene and two sons Clinton Marsh Clarksville Dwight Marsh Council Bluffs. Funeral services set for Friday at 2 00 pm at the Methodist Church. Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.
Seventy seven Iowa school bus mechanics attended a short course at Iowa State University in Arpes last week. The session, run by the Transportation Division of the State Department of Public Instruction and Engineering Extension, featured lectures demonstrations and hands on projects to update maintenance methods using mock up and real vehicle parts.
The July 14 Tuesday night games are moved to Friday July 17 due to other commitments. Local teams are coordinating schedules and informing players and spectators of the shift in the week’s slate.
Mrs. Harry E Hampel resigns as Home Service chairman of the Butler County Red Cross effective July 1. Carl Heyenga announces Clair Speedy of Allison will fill the vacancy, with Hampel moved to a new role as Volunteer Program Consultant in Home Service for the Midwestern Area.
Mrs. George L Shafer 72 died Tuesday morning at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City after a heart attack. Survived by husband two sons Eugene stationed with Air Force near Okinawa and Harlan Worland Wyoming. two daughters Lucille Ledwig St Louis and Merle Gray San Francisco. Funeral arrangements by Reid's Funeral Chapel.
Expenditures from public assistance funds amount to 4 822 868 for June statewide in Iowa. Butler County totals 34 673 with 22 159 for old age aid 2 061 for medical aid the aged 8 225 for dependent children 1 554 for aid to the blind and 719 for aid to the disabled. Medical aid to the aged has totaled 1 375 451 19 through six months of operation.
Verlyn Schrage has been discharged from Mercy Hospital in Mason City after several days of observation and treatment.
Mr and Mrs Gerald Wagner Irene Landers and Mr and Mrs Edward Fucss returned home Saturday after a week in New York City with Mr and Mrs William Schroeder. They visited the World's Fair and took a ferry to Liberty Island. They also saw the Empire State Building Grand Central Station and Times Square.
A family golf and hamburger fry is set for Sunday July 12 at 3 00 pm at the Country Club. A mixed 2 ball foursome tournament will be held at that time. Salvation Army backs a July fund drive led by Charles Bar as Greene unit chair with V. K. Barth and Dr. B. V. Andersen on the committee. John Alexander will seek donations from friends. the effort funds daily aid for illness misfortune glasses dental care and fire victims locally and statewide.
The 1963 crop price support reseal program on soybeans has been announced by Butler County ASC Chair Herman Stubbe. Farmers can extend current price support loans on farm-stored soybeans and earn storage payments. New maturities extend to July 31, 1965 with prorated storage at 14 cents per bushel per year.
A charity grudge game between farmers and businessmen is set for Sunday July 12 at 8 PM with a 5 run per inning limit and a noon curfew if needed. Managers Drake and Anderson negotiate age rules rosters and umpire choices while players like Stock Fischer MaJewski and Mead fill town roster amid colorful nicknames. Proceeds go to Little League funds and gate admissions will be charged.
James Foster a University of Missouri graduate will become District Forester with the State Conservation Commission. He will head a forest district covering Mitchell Howard Floyd Chickasaw Butler and Bremer Counties with two months of training before starting duties in Charles City.
Glade Heichel competed in boat races at Clinton on Saturday and Charles City on Sunday. He earned thirds in the A and B Runabouts and a third and fourth in B Hydro at Clinton, then won B Runabout, placed second and fourth in A Hydro, and finished with two second places in B Hydro at Charles City.
The Greene Junior Legion team won 9 to 5 at Sheffield Tuesday night June 30. Greene plated four in the third with Teeple Ott and Woodley key hits, added one in the fourth, three in the sixth, and final run in the seventh. Ott pitched 6 1/3 innings allowing five runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Marsh finished with no runs allowed on two hits over the last inning.
