The piece decries brief tax relief after Christmas and warns of rising taxes in 1966. It notes Social Security taxes for earners above 6600 will rise by 277, with equal employer increases, a 2 percent residential tax rise in Butler County, and rumors of a federal income tax hike.
The Iowa State Tax Commission has approved a 2 percent increase on all residential property in Butler County towns. The Butler County Auditor announced the rise applies only to incorporated areas. Final figures will be delayed as state approval is needed before completing county assessments, a minor adjustment compared with others statewide.
State Forestry officials announced soft maple nursery stock in the 1-0 age class will be available this spring from the State Conservation Commission Nursery. The stock can be used in ASC and wildlife programs and costs $16.00 per thousand. Other stock is available and may be ordered now.

United Telephone Company announces a 7 percent tax reduction on bills for service billed from January 1 to December 31, 1966. Federal excise tax drops from 10 percent to 3 percent, with further 1 percent reductions in January 1987 and January 1968, terminating in January 1969. Manager Robert Sprague states customers will receive full savings.
Luther College Choir Decorah Iowa will appear at Greene High School gymnasium on Sunday January 9 1966 at 11:00 am replacing the morning worship. A free will offering will be collected with proceeds to the choir. Local youths Donald Devies and William Thompson sing with the group. The choir has toured the Midwest since 1946 and appeared on NBC CBS radio and TV. The 1967 Europe tour includes the International Church Music Seminar in East Germany marking Luther Anniversary Year.
The Ramblers beat Nashua 42 to 25 with Katie Astor and Cheryl Neumeyer each scoring 15 points to lead the Ramblerettes. Donna Weichers added 9, Jane McRoberts 4 as Nashua's Usher led with 12 points.
Members of Round Grove Golf and Country Club will hold their annual meeting next Monday evening at 7 30 at the Community Center. The annual report will be read and officers and board members will be elected. All members are urged to attend.
In Waterloo Mrs. Joe Vander Kolk was taken to Allen Memorial Hospital for treatment. In Charles City Mrs. Frank Lockwood was admitted to Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Robert C. Wilson district director of the Omaha INS reminds all aliens to report their addresses during January. Reports available at post offices and INS offices. submissions to those offices. Parents report for alien children under 14. Wilful failure may incur serious penalties.
The Butler County Board of Supervisors met at the Court House in Allison on Monday January 3 1966 electing Harold E Voss of Austinville as chairman and Cecil W Starkweather of Greene to a second term as second district supervisor. Mr Starkweather previously chaired the board in 1965. The board also named county newspapers and set maximum depositories for funds including State Bank of Allison and several others. County engineer H M Brower was appointed to a five year term on the Conservation Board. Bounty rates for crows pocket gophers and wolves were retained at ten cents per gopher foot and crow head and ten dollars for wolves.
Kenneth Monroe Raymond, 19, of Greene was critically injured when his northbound car on I 35 struck a bridge abutment at the Pflumm road overpass in Lenexa near Kansas City Kansas. He was treated at Shawnee Mission Hospital and later transferred to University Hospital in Iowa City for surgery.
Greene physician Bruce V Andersen has been elected to active membership in the American Academy of General Practice a national body with 29000 family doctors. Members must complete 150 hours of postgraduate study every three years to stay current with medical advances. The AAGP founded in 1947 is the second largest U.S. medical association.
NIAD progress reports will be presented at the January 12 meeting in the Hanford Hotel Mason City. Chairman Bob Rost says committee heads will review accomplishments and future plans with attendees invited from Greene by Jim Drake carpooling options. Dr Ronald Powers of Iowa State University will discuss NIAD area challenges.
The annual Burning of the Greens will be held Sunday January 9 at 5:00 p.m. at Klassi acres Greene. Two Brownie princesses and three Girl Scout queens will be crowned followed by a short program and Christmas carols around the fire. Explorer Scouts will collect Christmas trees on Saturday January 8, with residents asked to place their trees in front yards early morning for pickup.
Story Hour resumes Saturday January 8 at Greve Public Library from 1 15 to 2 pm for children four years old and over. All attendees should enter through the side door.
Ramblerettes defeated Rockford 63 to 55 to solidify first place as Greene Ramblers beat the Warriors 68 45 and drop Rockford and Ramblerettes in league standings. Ann Rattler led scoring with 40 points for Greene while Sheryl VandenBrand paced Rockford with 25 points.
The 61st General Assembly mandates Iowa residents report their living district on the income tax form to aid future state aid allocations. Greene Community School District is cited as the district name. Officials urge superintendents to provide correct district names to enrolled students, including resident and non-resident pupils.
Mr and Mrs Lous Marzen Jr of Marble Rock welcome a son Daniel Joseph born December 28 at Orial Hospital Charles City. Weighing 8 pounds 54 ounces. Grandparents Louis Van Lent of Dougherty and Mr and Mrs Louis Marten Sr of Marble Rock. Siblings Randy 5 Laurie Lee 4 and Ralph 2.
In Greene Iowa the West Bank of the Shell Rock River near the dam was reinforced with 450 loads of rock fill donated by local firms and residents. Tom Albrecht Tory Green Fran cs Lubben and Darrel Davis coordinated quarry stone and trucking with Butler County Conservation Board support. Leonard Nichol led rock placement and landscaping transforming a former pit behind a building into usable river overlook and parking. The effort used about 3000 tons of fill at minimal cost, with two Greene trucks and future paving to finish the site.
Greene matmen beat visiting Rockford 32 to 11 to improve to 4 and 2 in conference action. Key results include Trees and Leavens pinning, Thompson, Noel, Cheney, Allen, Van Raden and Wirham securing decisions, with losses by Ascher, Litterer, Rutter, and others. B squad fell 27 to 19. Greene hosts Riceville Friday and St Ansgar next Tuesday.
Mrs F Tatum long time resident of Heritage Home in Clarion fell on Sunday December 26 and fractured her right hip. She was admitted to Clarion Memorial Hospital and underwent surgery last Saturday. She is the mother of Vv J Tatum of Greene.
Mrs. Galen Brinkman was released to return home Sunday from Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City after receiving medical treatment.
