The editor notes a year end weary mood and urges Greene residents to be active boosters for community projects. He jokes about stock images of Father Time and cherubs, predicts Viet Nam news may shift in 1968, and calls for financial responsibility and civic engagement.
NIACC offers several financial aid programs for 1987 68 including National Defense Student Loans with 71 participants, Educational Opportunity Grants aiding 76 students, plus College Work Study for 106 workers. Over 20 000 and 24 000 respectively are committed to the first two programs, with remaining funds limited.
Mrs Berniece Culbertson of Rochester Minnesota underwent eye surgery Friday at Wills Eye Hospital Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Her sister Mrs Robert Curtis of Greene is with her. Mrs Culbertson will be hospitalized for at least another week.
Officials of the Junior Chamber of Commerce announce Dr Max and Mombo from WMT TV Cedar Rapids will appear in Greene on Saturday January 20 at 2:00 PM for a program at the high school gym. Admission will be charged and prizes awarded. Further details to follow.
An open house on floor coverings will run January 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Farm Bureau Auditorium Allison. Roberta Wiegmann notes exhibits on current covers plus care and selection tips. A 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. talk by June Brown of Town State University Ames adds appeal. Alice Maury Davis Hearn born May 27 1904 in Dumont daughter of Howard and Mabel Davis lived in Buller county most of life. She married Clair Hearn August 24 1921 in Dumont and lived in Allison Greene. Survived by husband two sons Calvin and Dallas father Howard Davis four brothers nine grandchildren three great grandchildren. funeral December 27 at Bethany United Brethren Church Dumont.
Mr and Mrs Keith Harris of Des Moines announce the birth of a daughter on December 31 weighing 6 pounds named Stephanie. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Cecil Harris of Greene and Mr and Mrs Ed Eppley of Clarks ville.
The Young Americans concert at North Iowa Area Community College has been postponed until late spring. Student Senate sponsor Jack Page says the entire tour is rescheduled for later in the year due to the delay.
Ronnie Hermann son of Mr and Mrs Earl Hermann is pictured with a 57 pound beaver caught on Christmas morning from Cold Water Creek. The animal met its fate in a No 330 Convair Killer trap in Stanton's woods, marking his fourth and largest beaver of the season.
The Buller County Council of Republican women will meet January 9 at 2:00 PM at the home of Senator and Mrs. Vernon H. Kyhl in Parkersburg. Guest speaker T Cooper Evans of Grundy Center, Grundy County Republican Central Committee Chairman, will discuss government. All members urged to attend.
The Waterloo Social Security District Office has moved to 525 West Fifth Street. District Manager Earl T. Johnson says the new site, built for the SSA and owned by Charles W. Granger, keeps the same phone number 234 1554. Office hours are Mondays 8:30 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. and Tuesday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. For those 65 and older who did not sign up for supplementary medical insurance, enrollments for Medicare are open during January February and March 1968. The staff will assist with benefit filings and inquiries. An open house may be scheduled later.
Russell J. Perry, Aplington volunteer county savings bonds chairman, reports Butler County November sales of 335, five hundred thirty five dollars in Series E and H Bonds and Freedom Shares. The eleven month total reaches 497,979 at 63 percent of the 1967 goal. Three counties Clayton Decatur and Van Buren join Lynn County in beating their 1967 targets. Iowa November sales total 86,977,564 with an eleven month sum of 90,744,969 at 75 percent of the quota.
Marine Private Dean M. Poppe of Greene has completed eight weeks of recruit training at the San Diego Marine Corps Recruit Depot. He will undergo two to four weeks of individual combat training, then report to his first assignment after home leave. The program emphasizes conditioning, survival, marksmanship, drill, and basic military subjects.
Mrs. Royal Wardman and John joined the Edward Hardman family in East Peoria for Christmas. On Thursday a funeral was held for G. R. Turk Balderson at Fairfield. Balderson, who died December 26 after a brief illness, was Mrs. Hardman’s brother-in-law. He was known as Florence Merrick in Greene.
The Gabe and Hamilton Implement Company was robbed for the third time in two months on Wednesday evening December 27. Thieves forced a rear door and punched the safe dial, taking 530 dollars. The Farmers Co-op Elevator was entered but no money was taken. the safes were pried but contained nothing. Town marshal Arthur Weiss alerted the Floyd, Butler, Nora Springs, Rockford, and Marble Rock authorities, but the burglars had fled.
The Butler County Extension Service has completed its annual report for 1967. Gary Frahm, County Extension Director, notes the council chair was Lloyd Miller of Clarksville. Programs covered weed and insect control, soil and water conservation, crop production, beef and swine nutrition, dairy practices, farm and home business analysis, 4-H youth, clothing and personal grooming, kitchen planning, laundry aids, and welfare dimensions. Staff includes Frahm, Roberta Wiegmann, and Kermit J. Hildahl.
Butler County dog owners are reminded by the county assessor that dogs vaccinated before July 1, 1966 must be re vaccinated to obtain a dog license this year. Owners must show proof of vaccination when visiting the assessor and pay the regular license fee.
Two farm auctions appear this week in the Greene Recorder. The Bert Boyd farm sale west of Greene is set for Wednesday January 10. The Mrs Lester McRoberts farm sale between Marble Rock and Rockford takes place on Thursday January 11.
Butler County Extension Director Gary Frahm urges farmers to prepare farm records for tax season. Everett Stoneberg of Iowa State University notes farmers deriving two thirds of income from farming have two federal options, calendar-year filers can file estimates by Jan 15 or file and pay by Feb 15, while state taxes offer similar timelines.
Robert Curtis local postmaster announces new postage rates effective January 7th. First class mail 6 cents per ounce or fraction. post cards 5 cents. Third class 6 cents for first two ounces plus 2 cents per additional ounce. Fourth class and library rates rise. special book rate 12 cents first pound then 6 cents per extra pound. Airmail 10 cents per ounce. cards 8 cents. over 7 ounces at parcel rates. Transient 2nd class 5 cents first two ounces plus 1 cent each extra. Minimum bulk 1.4 cents. Envelopes bearing old rates may be revalued with sufficient postage.
Second semester adult education classes at North Town Area Community College will begin February 5, according to Director Donald Ryerkerk. Registration for the courses runs January 15 to 26 by mail or in person at the Adult Education Office in the NIACC Main Building. Bulletins with offerings are being distributed and may be obtained by writing the Adult Education Office.
Mr Maury Conry of Greene received the Special Sales Achievement Award for 1967 from Standard Engineering Company at the annual sales meeting in Fort Dodge. The company manufactures and markets the Stan Holst line of farm equipment and presented the plaque for his special sales effort.
Rambler basketball and wrestling squads resume action Friday January 5 at Saint Ansgar and at home. Both teams are undefeated in conference play and considered co favorites for the title. Ken Sutton’s girls begin conference play January 12 at Manly, with practice in between.
In Hospital Albert Mahnke was admitted to the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City on Wednesday afternoon last week.
The annual Butler County CROP canvass raised 2280.03, short of the 4000 goal, with most funds from cash and crop donations. Township results list Albion 79.00, Dayton 129.68, Jackson 123.92, Butler 100.00, West Point 175.00, Beaver 171.90, Madison 177.00, Shell Rock 54.50, Washington 301.00, Bennedette 61.00, Pittsford 125.58, Coldwater 500 plus church donations, Ripley, Monroe 75.06, Fremont 3422.93, Jefferson 47.00, plus a surgery note for Mrs. Dean Edwards.
Last week featured two bowling leagues with Riverside Cafe Hamm's Chevy II and Nordmeyer Construction among winners. High scores included Carl Frascht 219 and Bob Barth 206 while others topped 500s across multiple games.
The Burning of the Greens Ceremony sponsored by the Girl Scouts will be held Sunday at 5:00 pm at Lassi Acres. Boy Scouts will collect trees on Saturday December 6, with curbside drop by 8:30 am. George Menken underwent surgery Tuesday morning January 2 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. He is reported to be in satisfactory condition and recovering in the facility's ward.
