Nixon resigns presidency and Ford assumes office
In a historic move, Richard M. Nixon resigns as President and Gerald R. Ford becomes President at age 61. The piece notes the pursuit of economy amid inflation and criticism of defense spending, including a $83.2 billion Defense budget and a separate $3 billion military construction bill, plus concerns over F-111 aircraft costs and a large number of counselors. It also covers Nixon vetoing the Agriculture Appropriation bill and a section on French farmers blocking pork from Communist China, followed by Iowa potato sprouting guidance from Kermit Hildahl.

Tax breaks and deductions for seniors and bar exam costs
Taxpayers age 63 and older may qualify for some favorable tax provisions, including higher basic incomes limits and specific credits. Bar exam fees and related course costs are not deductible business expenses. Refund delays occur when filers neglect to attach required information or provide current addresses. Bad debt deductions for loans to a son are generally not allowed unless you can prove uncollectibility and future worthlessness.
Stanley presses stance on campaign money from groups
Muscatine Republican US Senate hopeful Dave Stanley reaffirmed his refusal to take funds from pressure groups and urged others to do the same. He praised North Dakota Democrats for rejecting group money, noting his opponent John Culker has taken contributions from 29 groups. Stanley backs funding campaigns through individual contributions or party channels. A second item notes Marvin Martin family in Harlan found tomato like growths on potato plants, a horticultural oddity linking to plant families.
