Fire destroys Greene Elevator at Farmers Inc

Fire destroyed the Greene elevator at Farmers Inc. in Greene last week causing an estimated 500000 dollars in losses. The automatic sprinkler system operated but could not contain the blaze. About 100000 bushels of grain, mostly corn, were inside the 150000 bushel capacity structure. The fire occurred after welding work near the area above the elevator, with firefighters assessing blast danger as gear moved grain and equipment to trucks.

Greene Water System Loan Approved for City

The Farmers Home Administration of USDA approves a $500000 loan to the City of Greene for a new water system. Plan includes an elevated storage tank and additional distribution mains serving about 270 users. The 40 year loan carries 5 percent interest to improve water quality, pressure, and fire safety.

Speech and Language Screening at Greene Elementary

A speech and language screening will be conducted at Greene Elementary School by the Speech and Language Clinician on Friday August 27. All first grade children and new students in the district and all students previously enrolled in speech will be included in this brief assessment of each child's overall Speech and Language development. Following completion of the screening, you will be informed of the results.

Susan Rottler of Greene joined 272 other undergraduates and graduates at Drake University Des Moines as they completed summer session programs. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with emphasis on radio and television. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Verne Rottler.

Funeral services for Gaylord F. McCarty 71 of Mandan North Dakota follow a Rosary at Reid's Funeral Chapel and a visitation Wednesday evening. Mass will be Thursday at St Mary’s Catholic Church with burial in St Mary’s Cemetery. Surviving are wife Tillie daughter Mrs Norman Olzweski a brother three sisters and two grandchildren.

Public Dance at Community Center Admits $2

A public dance will be held Friday August 27 at the Community Center from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Stack will be furnishing the music. Admission is two dollars.

Campaigning Steve Rapp Visits Butler County on County Tour

Third District candidate Steve Rapp campaigned across Butler County on August 16 and 17 as part of his plan to spend a week in each of 18 counties. He promoted extended county visits to gauge citizen opinions and was honored at the Butler County Democratic Gala in Allison. Activities included coffee in Shell Rock, cafe service, nursing home dinners, and plant tours with local supporters.

Quarter horse qualifies for World Championship

Mary Lou Ott of Greene Louisiana has qualified her American Quarter Horse Miss Edred Glo for the 1976 World Championship Quarter Horse Show in Oklahoma City November 18–22 at Jim Norick State Fair Arena. About 1200 horses are expected with 45 events and over $100,000 in prize money. Exhibitor Dave Kunkle will show Miss Edred Glo in Senior Reining.
