Charles J. Arnold writes a humorous column noting frost forecasts and local gaffes about names and items. He jokes about Skimmerhorn and a misnamed shotgun, laments mock chapel at DePauw, and ridicules politics and barber shop comforts during hard times.
Rachel Dean, a sophomore at DePauw University, will give an organ recital at the Methodist church Sunday at 4 PM. She has memorized about fifty numbers and has shown remarkable progress during two years of study. The program is open to the public and free of charge.
The forecast shows fair conditions tonight and Sunday with rising temperatures. Daytime highs on Sunday are expected to be mild as skies stay clear and winds remain light.
Open rounds of the annual state college tennis tournament trimmed thirty eight entrants to ten survivors. Rain sent matches indoors at Trueblood Fieldhouse with outdoor play planned if weather clears. Surviving players include White of Purdue Christopher Neunier Sunman of Butler McCormack of DePauw Allemby Churchill of State Normal Sessions Reynolds Johnson of Earlham.
Roy Arnold, assistant county road superintendent, says he bought tires from a Crawfordsville firm without approval. The Putnam County commissioners and highway superintendent issue a statement disavowing responsibility for the transaction and warning no county employee was authorized to purchase tires.
University athletes receive track sweaters for thirteen Little State champions led by Captain Andrew Ramsey and H Gregg Ransburg among others. Baseball awards include twelve varsity letters four reserves and fourteen freshmen numerals with captains Norman Babcock and Marvin O’Neal among the named recipients.
The Putnam County Bankers association held rifle and pistol elimination matches on a farm near town drawing about seventy participants. The rifle state entrants are Marion Crawley Lloyd Houck Lester Sudranski with Don McLean, Bark Everman and Tom Welch for the pistol team. Sudranski tops pistol scoring but will join rifle state meet. Alternates are Neal Everman and Virgil McCammack. The June 9 state meet is in Bort Benjamin Harrison.
The DePauw Tigers were set to face Wabash College on McKeen Field this afternoon. The game, moved from Friday due to rain, was postponed.
Formal opening of a new brick hotel at Turkey Run State Park will be marked today by state officials including Gov. and Mrs. Harry G. Leslie. The ceremony signals added recreational facilities and tourism potential for the park.
The First Baptist church plans a special program next Sunday with 9 30 Sunday school and 10 40 preaching service followed by a congregational dinner. Members of the Oh Boy PL UL sponsor a reunion and the day promises an old fashioned good time.
The baccalaureate service for Greencastle High School graduates will be held Sunday at 7 45 pm in the high school auditorium. Rev Win J Crowder of the First Baptist Church will deliver the sermon titled The Alabaster Life with Rev B H Bruner giving the invocation and Rev V L Raphael reading the scripture. Dr C D W Hildebrand will give the benediction. Music includes The Lord Is My Shepherd and Jehovah Reigns performed by the First Baptist Choir and a class song America.
Horace Link & Co. offers a trade in value of $10 on an old oil stove when purchasing a new Red Star Boss or High Pressure oil stove. This deal helps customers replace the old unit with a newer, up to date stove at a reasonable price.
Twenty years ago in Greencastle the city council cut the fire department duty crew to three men from four, saving about five thousand five hundred dollars over five years. A trophy car race drew Terre Haute automobiles through town. The Meharry hall minstrel show featured Billy Koehler at the piano and Harry Hughes singing. Mrs. James Vermillion hosted a surprise dinner for Mrs. Bascom O'Hair returning from Tampa Florida.
Wabash College student David Martin 21 of Crawfordsville suffered severe cuts to face and neck when a southbound Monon freight struck the rear of his car at the Jackson street crossing in Greencastle about 1140 p.m. Kenneth Warren escaped injury. The car was demolished and Martin was treated at a Green castle physician’s office before returning home.
Notre Dame captured the Inter collegiate state golf tournament at Greencastle Country Club with 647 over 36 holes. Redmond led individuals with 158 and Moler followed at 159, as the Irish edged Indiana and others for the title.
Dwight Priest of Greencastle and Mary Risk of Green Leantle obtained a marriage license. Priest is 41 and Risk 18. The records list their ages and hometowns with no further conditions noted.
The Girl Reserves announce a summer program to hold story hours at school playgrounds. Each morning weekly, two groups will read to children in grades one through three and four through six. Mrs. Delilah Thomas, city librarian, will help select suitable stories.
Greencastle patriotic groups schedule Memorial Day events at Forest Hill cemetery at 2 pm with parade from the square at 1 pm. Louis Hays to read Gettysburg Address. Rev B H Bruner to preside. Congressman Noble Johnson to speak. If rain, program moves to the courthouse. committee to meet Monday at Lakin Funeral Home to finalize plans.
The 1950 DePauw Mirage features a new honor with three men and three women named as the most representative students. Angus Cameron Richard Ward Ruth Halti Guernsey Van Riper Emma Burke Franklin Cole and Ruth Ward appear in a full page photo section edited by Richard Wurst.
The window of R P Mullins’s car was broken when a calf appeared in the road north of Greencastle. Mullins and Elmer Crawley were returning from Danville when the vehicle swerved into the ditch. They found a cattle truck stalled ahead as its driver had released cattle to aid climbing a hill.
Indiana attorney Ethan A. Miles charged that Indiana State Farm officials subjected D B E Shumaker to severe manual labor to degrade him. He claimed the former Anti-Saloon League leader was forced to work in a creamery and grind Fifty turns of a mill while enduring painful punishment during fifty days of confinement.
James Phillips aged about 80 of Madison township died this morning at Rockville from infirmities of advanced age. He leaves a son Charles of Danville Illinois a grandson James Taber of Indianapolis a sister Mrs Josiah Gardner and a half brother Robert Phillips of Monroe township. Funeral Monday at 2 20 PM at Long Branch church with Rev A L Russell of Indianapolis in charge. Burial in Long Branch Cemetery. Friends may call at McCurry Funeral Home.
Mrs. John F. Dreyer formerly Edith Ash of this city has died in St. Louis Park Minnesota. She leaves many friends who are grieved by the news.
