Column by Charles J. Arnold comments on mild weather and upcoming picnics, mentions a motor boat regatta in South Bend on June 8 with forty thousand spectators, and shares a humorous bird story about a blackbird softening a bread crust at a bird bath. He also jokes about local topics including county tire purchases and playful anecdotes.
Funeral services for James Phillips a Putnam County resident who died Saturday in Rockville were held at 2 30 PM in Long Branch church with interment in the cemetery. Rev A N Russell of Indianapolis conducted the services. He was brother of Mrs Josiah Gardner of South Indiana Street.
Severn high schools and one college held picnics at the Shades during the past week. Indiana Dental college spent last Tuesday there and on the same day Crawfordsville high school senior class was there. On Friday the Brasil high school seniors held their third annual picnic.
Rev William J Crowder of First Baptist delivered the Greencastle High School annual class sermon in the high school auditorium. The topic The Alabaster Life focused on Mary anointing Jesus. Audience included graduates families and church congregations with First Baptist choir providing music. The message urged voluntary heartfelt giving and service to Christ.
The Greencastle Public Schools present the fourth annual physical education exhibition under Miss Leona Kestner and Coach W. E. Bausman on Tuesday at 7 30 in the Vocational Building.Admission is free with a Maypole dance, a basketball game, a pirates drill, and a 48 girl dance among the featured acts.
The First Baptist church held a special fellowship service with increased attendance and plans to raise Sunday school membership to 150 next month. Pastor Wm. J. Crowder is praised for leadership as the old B Y P U reunites with former B Y P U members joining a new Sunday school class for daily life topics. Former college students visiting for the church commencement attended, with dinner and a program sponsored by the old B Y P U.
Senior class day for the graduating class of Greencastle High School will be held tomorrow at 1 30 in the high school building. The Minaret will appear at this time. Class awards will be announced and a program of stunts will be given by the classes.
A fast Pennsylvania freight train was wrecked just east of Reeseville Monday morning around 2 o clock when trucks came from under a wheat laden box car. The car broke and trucks left the car at mid train. the wreck required a Terre Haute wrecker to place new trucks. The track cleared by 5 am and the Pennsylvania mail train was rerouted over the Big Four lines.
Dean Vaught twenty of Lime Dale is charged in Putnam circuit court with forgery after allegedly cashing a fraudulent thirty five dollar check at Je Penney store. He is said to have confessed and was arrested Saturday afternoon while wearing clothing bought with the forged funds. He faces further arraignment Tuesday morning.
A Sunday collision on the National Road west of Belleville involved a Nicholas car and a Guelting car. Leo Guelting of Evansville was badly hurt and rushed to an Indianapolis hospital while Mrs. H. R. Nicholas and her mother were treated at home for injuries and shock. The truck driver fled. authorities later arrested him in Danville.
Clarence D. Herod of Greencastle and a Purdue agriculture junior is named assistant at the Federal Fruit Laboratory in Vincennes Indiana. The appointment runs through the summer. He is the son of Mr and Mrs M O Herod of Bloomington and Hanna streets.
Gordon Ball 26 of Indianapolis, driver for A and C Trucking Co., was fined 5 dollars and costs by Mayor W L Denman for operating a motor truck without proper license. He had one license plate and no title certificate. Ball, delivering Kroger merchandise, was arrested by City Marshal Ott Dobbs and arraigned, pleaded guilty, and was released after company funds were wired to cover the fine. This marks the third A and C Trucking Co. driver fined recently for the same offense.
The Cloverdale baseball team defeated the Beach Grove Reds 7 to 5 at Morrison Park on Sunday afternoon. Cloverdale is set to play the Bloomington Greys at Morrison Park next Sunday. Mr and Mrs Homer Phipps of Lena welcomed a daughter born Saturday.
Two lawsuits were filed in Putnam Circuit Court arising from a Sunday auto crash on the National road two miles west of Bellville. Howard R. Nicholas and Pearl Nicholas claim the truck driver, unnamed, caused the collision through negligent driving, seeking 5000 for Pearl and 1500 for damages to their car. Leo Guelting of Greencastle was reportedly fatally injured and Mrs. Pearl Nicholas was injured, with the Nicholas auto taken to Franklin Street garage.
New X-ray equipment was installed in the X-Ray Department of Putnam County hospital. Dr. Wo. M. McGaughey arranged the purchase and installation, marking the first update since the department opened seven years ago.
A Greencastle city council mulls moving private scales from streets amid community uproar. Robert Hanna buys a frame building on Dr. Tucker's lot and plans relocation to Hanna street. Roachdale schools name Miss Alice Potter music instructor for next year. G A R encampment attendees listed from Greencastle including Col Matson Vestal Lockridge Cullen Miller and Grooms in Terre Haute.
Maurice Fletcher Brattan 21 a Crawfordsville printer weds Lottie Gertrude Carlisle 19 a Crawfordsville factory worker. Kelsey Leach 22 of Munice marries Bonnita Keen 21 of Springfield in a ceremony recording two local unions.
Indianapolis, May 26. More than seven hundred thousand young trees were chipped from the state conservation department tree nursery at Henryville this spring, the largest annual output on record. The trees aid reforestation of waste land, windbreaks on farms, around orchards, and reforestation of stripped coal lands in southwestern Indiana.
Greencastle Chapter No. 22 invites members to a 7:30 p m meeting on Monday with M E M degree led by C F Mathes H P in charge.

A telegram from Denver reports the death of Bernard McCurry, twelve, due to heart leakage after a month of illness. He was a nephew of Ross and Morris Burks of Martinsville Street in Greencastle.
At an outdoor carnival in Lepanto Arkansas four men were killed and nine wounded in a gun battle between rival liquor and narcotics gangs. By standers were among the victims as Ira Williams Clyde Keller and Walter Mobley died. Officer W R Adams ended the fight by firing on Keller who died en route to hospital. Luttrell and Keller had been arrested recently and freed on bond.
Eight year old John Everett Hood of Liberty street suffered a painful burn to his right eye Sunday when a marshmallow on a stick was flipped off and caught fire. He attempted to blow out the flames.
In Upland Indiana Rev. William A Sunday attacks American education as religiously weak during the Maytag gym dedication at Taylor University. He calls schools hotbeds of damnation and says the United States and Britain are near the zero mark in religion.
Wabash overwhelmed DePauw at McKeenfield scoring 17 runs to none. Weist pitched a three hit shutout while Wildman allowed fourteen hits. Heavy hitting by Chase highlighted the visitors offense as DePauw errors plagued the Old Gold.
