Golden Spike Ceremony at Gold Creek 1883 Montana

A distinguished Montana crowd gathered at Gold Creek near Hellgate Canyon on September 8 1883 for the Northern Pacific final spike ceremony. German counts and barons watched as General Grant spoke while Henry Villard hosted and the crowd cheered the coast-to-coast completion. The event underscored Montana’s stake in rail expansion and the later Montana Union line through Pipestone Pass and Mullan tunnel.
