Old Puzzle on Monkey, Mother Ages and Rope Length
A Victorian riddle describes a rope over a pulley with a weight on one end and a monkey on the other. The rope weighs four ounces per foot and both rope length sides are equal. The ages of the monkey and its mother sum to four years. The monkey’s weight in pounds equals the mother’s age in years. A complex age relation links the mother’s age to the monkey’s ages and future ages. The rope weight plus end weight equals half again the difference between rope weight and monkey weight. The puzzle invites solving to find the rope length.
