Walter Butler and the Mohawk Valley War Legend
A critical portrait of Walter Butler, once vilified as a Revolution era arch villain, is reassessed. The article traces his life from a youthful leader to a contested figure, noting missing records, contested loyalties, and new scholarship that portrays him as a capable commander who led Butler Rangers, faced capture, imprisonment, and a final death at Johnstown. It contrasts earlier sensational depictions with research that emphasizes his strategic moves and contested actions.
