Port Lavaca Causeway Adds Fishing Lights on Pier
Five of the latest type flood lights were added along the 3200 foot Port Lavaca Causeway State Park across Lavaca Bay Calhoun County. The lights over Chicken Reef are about 50 percent stronger than mercury vapor lights and emit a white glow. Other lights along the pier improve visibility for pedestrians. The causeway, once old Highway 35 damaged by Hurricane Carla in 1961, was transferred to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and converted to a fishing pier where trout drum redfish and flounder are caught. A concession stand sells bait snacks and tackle. Pier fees run 90 cents for adults 25 cents for teenagers and free for children under twelve.
