Hungry War era rations and frontier life amid the Revolution
The piece recalls tattered colonial troops facing hunger against well fed British Regulars and Tory forces. It notes the British commissary supplying meals, Indian corn aiding troops and families, Marion’s strike force carrying corn and lean beef, and frontier sustenance from Tennessee to Virginia with pumpkins and foraged greens. It also mentions hardship in Massachusetts and early methods like bread from flour paste and pumpkin frying.
